A new political comedy is apparently being pitched to studios, and interest is running high. Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell would star in the film which centers on two political candidates, set to be timed with the 2012 U.S. presidential race.  Deadline reports that Jay Roach would to direct the comedy. Although most remember Roach for Meet the Parents and the Austin Powers series, he also directed 2008’s fantastic Emmy-winning film Recount for HBO, about the 2000 Bush vs. Gore election and fallout.  Given his success on that project, a political comedy starring two of the funniest comedians working today seems to be directly in Roach’s wheelhouse.

It’s not known how soon the project would go into production, but given the caliber of talent involved and reaction from the studios to the pitch, it’s assumed that whichever studio picks up the property will want to get the ball rolling as soon as possible. Galifianakis is currently filming The Hangover Part II and Ferrell recently wrapped the Spanish-language film Casa de mi padre. While both most likely have a number of projects they’re circling/thinking about working on next, hopefully this political comedy will be high on the list. I like the combination of talent involved with the project. Here’s hoping Roach finds someone great to write the script and production gets started sooner rather than later.
