Zack Snyder to Direct SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL

     October 4, 2010

Zack Snyder is directing the upcoming Superman: The Man of Steel (Deadline).  Snyder was on a shortlist that also included Tony Scott (Man on Fire), Matt Reeves (Let Me In), Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles), Duncan Jones (Moon), and Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler).  As we’ve previously reported, the new Superman is being overseen by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer is handling the script.  It’s safe to assume that his producing partner/wife Debbie Snyder will come on board to produce.

Hit the jump for what we know about The Man of Steel and my thoughts on Snyder getting the gig.

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about The Man of Steel other than it will be set in a “modern context“, and that Warner Bros. is targeting the film for the 2012 holiday season.  It’s also assumed that they’ll be starting completely fresh in regards to casting.

Among the potential candidates to get Superman, I have mixed feelings on Snyder.  I’m worried that his directing style may overshadow the story.  Also, while I like Snyder’s films when I first see them, their impact diminishes over time.  However, Snyder does know how to handle a big budget plus the involvement of Nolan may provide some balance.  I’m also hearing that Snyder’s upcoming film, Sucker Punch, looks incredible but the story is somewhat lacking.  Having Nolan oversee the project and Snyder working from David Goyer’s script allays my fears to an extent.

What do you think about Snyder getting the gig?  Sounds off in the comments section.

    Style over substance, baybay!

      Couldn’t said it better myself!

I’ve loved everything the man has done so far, no reason to think otherwise for this film. Hell, it’s not like it could be WORSE than the last time Superman was on screen.

    • [A]

Well, if you *loved* everything he’s done so far..

      • Liam

Yes. Yes I have. Thus the reason I said it.

Was there some point I missed?

Nothing could be worst then Superman Returns, it just keep getting worst as time goes by.

My initial reaction is excitement that they are negotiating with a capable director. His films have really polarized critics, but I see him winning the general audiences much easier. Maybe that says something about his films, but I like him as a director.

The backing of Nolan and Goyer helps quite a bit. If Nolan truly does Godfather the film, and consequently Snyder, I think there will be a great balance that Snyder’s other films havent had.

Of all the directors mentioned, I think Reeves might be a better choice because he has shown he can handle action and depth, but Snyder hasn’t had a very deep script to work with that wasn’t a near reproduction of a famed graphic novel.

Snyder was the director I was hoping for on this one. I won’t be worried about him s much since Nolan is there.

what´s with all that goyer- hating nonsense, i mean, the guy didnt exactly made a hit with blade trinity but that was way before begins and TDK, and snyder is a great director, with an outstanding visual style, and if chris nolan hand- picked him out of the bunch must be for a legitimate reason. if nolan has proved something its that he has a great talent for picking the right people for his projects.

He proved he can handle characters and story with WATCHMEN. Yeah I liked it.
Plus NOLAN picked him. I’m totally cool with this.

with the exception of David Goyer’s script (the man knows how to propose an story but his scripts I don’t like) I’m very excited about all this. Superman has the potential to be a very visual experience and Snyder is definitely one of the best at that. And of course with Chris overseeing this we have a winner, of course not in the same level as Batman, but a strong one sure.

Snyder is a good choice, but personally would have preferred Aronofsky. Ive heard Zachary Levy is being considered as the caped lead

Best news i’ve heard all year.

  • IllusionOfLife

Aw man, Snyder was absolutely the last person on the list I would have chosen, as someone said above, his films are all style over substance, and to make Superman relevant again we really need a solid story. I hope that Nolan can counter balance Snyder’s stylistic approach, but I must admit my excitement has been reduced by several degrees.

As always, I’m willing to be proven wrong, but I fear the impact Snyder will have on this film.

Zack Snyder was chosen pretty much for being front of the line when it comes to recent releases from Warner Bros rather than a proper review of the shortlist directors. His style of dark doesn’t really fit with Superman. As for casting, it should be an easy decision. Just put Tom Welling in. As for the hated origin story, there doesn’t need to be one. Smallville took care of that for you.

    • sense11

Oh my god, I’m sorry for the comment but will you people give it a rest already.

No actor from Smallville, The Adventures of Lois & Clark or Superman Returns will be in The Man of Steel. It will never happen. Christopher Nolan would never do that.

Initially, I really was pretty upset at this. But, it really makes sense now. I mean, a Snyder Superman may be the perfect style to counterbalance a Nolan Batman. Just wait until the two heroes meet. It really up-plays the type of relationship the heroes have with each other.

I was hoping for Duncan Jones. Snyder just seems too… “safe” a choice.

I thought Dawn of the Dead was a lot of fun, 300 was probably one of the only trailers (short of The Matrix, Dark knight and Inception) that I had seen a million times… Watchmen directors cut is amazing… haven’t seen the owl movie, but sucker punch looks sweet… now…two things that can happen with Superman… make him dark as shit like The Dark Knight, make John Hamm Superman and have a really meaty story line. OR!!

they could totally destroy it by having it extremely effects laden and try to emulate the Richard Donner epics (which is what Singer did, and failed.) This has to be more original than anything else… then it might just work.

I was kinda hoping for Darren Aronofsky, but I’m thrilled for Zack Snyder too.

  • sense11

Fuck Yea, in my opinion Snyder & Aronofsky where the only real choices on that list. I love Watchmen & 300. Its very likely that Nolan & Snyder could prove to be a dynamite combination.

Bring on The Man of Steel

    Cast Sam Worthington as Superman!

    • Huffalump

Blegh! Do you want this film to win a Razzie?

  • BraveDave

I don’t get this “Style over Substance” accusation. Maybe with 300, but I think that the source material of 300 was style over substance and that’s how it translated. Watchmen was about as good an adaptation that I hoped for. I think Snyder gets it, and this will be a good Superman movie.

  • Zept

    Justin Bieber as Superman!!

  • Aromcath

As long as there’s a strong hand above Snyder sticking his directing style to the demands of the script then he’ll do just fine if not great.

They better not include Lex Luthor or General Zod in the new Superman movie or any Superman movies for a while. There are many Superman villains that have not been used in the movies but have been used on Smallville such as Bizarro, Brainiac, Doomsday, Metallo, Toyman and shortly, Darkseid. Other villains that they can use include Atomic Skull, Bloodsport, Bruno Mannheim, Conduit, Cyborg Superman, Faora, Gog, Imperiex, Intergang, Jax-Ur, Kryptonite Man, Livewire, Mala, Mercy Graves, Mongul, Morgan Edge, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Parasite, Prankster, Sam Lane, Silver Banshee, Solaris, Superboy-Prime, Superman Revenge Squad, Terra-Man, Titano, Ultra-Humanite, Ultraman.

Wow, this is unexpected I considered Superman to be below Snyder but that doesn’t seem to be the case. In my opinion, I think his wife Deborah convinced him to do it and he got heavy influence on the script with Goyer. It makes sense since his wife convinced him to direct Watchmen and now she wants him to do Superman.

Frankly I’m a little relieved, Snyder needs a big hit if he wants make all his future big budget weird movies. I think Warner Bros sweetened the deal by approving his next film.

Kudos for Nolan making the right choice for such a big movie Snyder was the only realistic choice. If it was really his choice that is.

  • Rockystallone6

I’m a bit disappointed that Zack Snyder is getting a lot of flack and negativity for this. First of all, I think Zack Snyder is a wonderful film maker. He’s fantastic and if you think about it, Zack is a perfect choice. WB’s and Chris Nolan wanted Zack for a few reasons: 1) They liked what he did with “Watchmen”, 2) He’s good with special effects and he’s a visual film maker which is what Superman needs 3) Superman needs the slow-motion special effect.

Secondly, “Watchmen” and “Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” were both amazing flicks, and I’m sure “Sucker-Punch” will be great too.

People accuse Zack of making the next Superman movie full of special effects and CGI, well like I said before, that’s why WB’s and Chris Nolan wanted him. The earlier Superman movies were used with lots of special effects ’cause CGI wasn’t around back in the 80′s so they had to do it the old fashioned way.

WB’s and Chris picking Zack is a bit controversial, yes, but that’s just proof that Zack is the right chioce if he’s getting so much hate. I believe in Zack and Christopher Nolan. They will make a great Superman movie. They will make Superman fans happy. Just give them a chance and believe in them.

Zack is a professional, of course, he won’t make it similar to “300″ and “Watchmen” at all. Zack is intelligent enough to stay true to Superman and he’s got Chris Nolan by his side to make it right. Give Zack a break and cut him some slack people!

  • Giomets154575

I Think Visually The story will be great due to snyder and story wise as far as script pacing and dialogue will be done justice by the Nolans, so i think this is a great marriage. Hopefully We will have a great Superman movie for the Next Generation , both intelligent and beautifully shot !

  • Tonamania

beyond ’300′, he doesn’t really have a mass market hit. I’m assuming the Superman and Nolan names will take care of that. Agree with alot of the folks about style over substance – at least to the extent that his style overpowers the substance in his flicks.

Would love to see a more gritty Superman. I don’t mean ripping dudes’ throats out (that’s Lobo’s job) and I don’t mean dark.

In any case, this news has caught my attention. If he doesn’t green screen everything (I hope he remembers how to shoot a “real” film), I’ll pay up to watch.

    • Alex

His films have plenty of substance, he just doesn’t pretend to act ‘serious’ with his films. Dawn of the Dead is very deep, so is 300 and Watchmen. Most viewers just don’t take him seriously enough cause his films are so rooted in pop culture. (It’s like taking Britney Spears songs seriously)

  • Anova18
