Zack Snyder Talks SUPERMAN Reboot, Says Film Assumes “There’s Been No Other Superman Movies”

     March 16, 2011

Director Zack Snyder recently took some time out of his busy press schedule promoting Sucker Punch to talk a bit about that other movie he’s working on. Snyder says that the Superman reboot, set to star Henry Cavill as Clark Kent himself, will not be a direct sequel to any other Superman films, taking a page out of the Batman Begins book:

“Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies. If you look at Batman Begins, there’s that structure, there’s the canon that we know about and respect but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies.  In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.”

Hit the jump for more from the director’s interview, including talk about his working relationship with producer Christopher Nolan and when we’ll get our first look at the Superman suit.

superman_alex_ross_01I’m thankful that Snyder’s approach will be wholly original, but I’m really hoping we don’t have to sit through another origin story. While Snyder was mum on other casting details (Diane Lane is set to play Martha Kent, while Kevin Costner is rumored to be taking on father Jonathan Kent), he did say that this time Superman would be throwing punches, unlike Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, saying “he’s a physical cat.”

When asked how his working relationship with producer Christopher Nolan has been going, Snyder responded thusly (via Hero Complex):

“It’s been really great. Chris is awesome. He’s super-respectful but super-helpful, too. You can’t imagine a more generous [collaborator]…once he sort of got what I want to do with it, he was like, ‘OK,’ and once he said, ‘You know what, that’s awesome,’ now he’s 100%. If I say, ‘What do you think of this?’ he’s like, ‘That’s awesome,’ and then there’s a great give-and-take about it, a great conversation that we can have about it and making it better everyday. And by the way he’s hilarious, too.”

Snyder also mentions that they’re probably going to have to unveil the Superman suit before they start filming. He’s all too aware that the suit will most likely be sighted on set and posted on the interwebs for all to see regardless.

No word on whether those reports that Viggo Mortensen will take on the role of General Zod are true or not. The article mentions that the likely title of the film will be Man of Steel, but it hasn’t been officially decided yet. To read the full interview, head over to Hero Complex. The Superman reboot is set to hit theaters December 2012.

Good. In Nolan and Snyder I trust

In Nolan I trust. In Snyder? Eh.

  • madcnut

Agreed. Nolan, yes! Snyder… jury out.

  • Brenno

Nolan, yes! Snyder, yes! Snyder under Nolan’s tutelage, YES!!

  • DevilGagaso

Nolan and Zack- a divine match made in Heaven for the audiences. Nolan is great with script and Zack kicks serious butt in visuals and adrenaline pumping action. Man of Steel will be AWESOME and one of the BIGGEST SUCCESS of 2012. In Zack and Nolan we trust. And I am glad that they are moving ahead with Christopher Reeve era. The audiences and fans have been traumatized by likes Bryan Singer who came up with a boredom feast…it’s time that the Greatest superhero gets his well deserved glory.

  • IllusionOfLife

Nolan has never made a bad movie, but Snyder is a little more hit or miss with me. 300 was definitely good, Watchmen was ok, and Legend of the Guardians was lame. The jury is still out for me on Sucker Punch, so we’ll wait and see what happens with that. I’m hoping though that Nolan will be able to bring out the best in Snyder.

    • BATMAN

I am bored by most of Nolans films, and his visuals and editing mostly suck! I am a fan of his Batfilms, but even they arent worth the hype. He is great at story though, and i like his approach to a point, but as a long time Batfan he has missed the mark many times.

Inception? Clever, yes! Good visuals, yes! Boring long and overgyped, yes!
Prestige? Clever, yes! Good visuals, yes! Boring long and overgyped, yes!
Memento? finally watched it after falling asleep twice, clever, but boring.
Insomnia? was ok as a rental. Didn’t know it was by Nolan at the time but it never jumped out at me as a great film. More a showcase that Robin Williams can do serious.

300, great, exciting, good visuals, EXACT to the graphic novel.
Watchmen? long, but interesting, great visuals, and just like the graphic novel (so ive heard.)
Guardians? Stunning visuals! Weird story/concept, but heard it followed the source too.

So far for me Snyder wins, but together Superman could be fantastic. But if iy was a choice? Snyder is who i want making Supe instead of Nolan.

I would love to see Snyder do Batman after TDKR, when it gets the reboot.

BATMAN – You obviously think all films are ‘boring and long’, therefore I think you should go back to your cartoons and leave the adults to talk cinema.

      • BATMAN

@Agent Black, Ha! What a pretentious Prick! You really judge intelligence on boredom?
I just see a whoop of Nolan fanboys that will swallow EVERYTHING that Nolan dishes out! You’ve all built him up to god like status.

I’m not saying his films are bad, I’m saying they can be a lil boring and drag on a bit. (The boats scene in TDK anyone?) And you are blinded by some of his flaws, where any other director on any other film, you will queue up in droves to bash on here for the same mistakes.

      • Leopolus

        boring???…please see a doctor….please!

      • dethbee

I agree. Nolan’s a decent mvoie maker but not the god-like director these bozos have built him up to be…TDK was too long (yes, that boat crap stuff!) and the same could be said of Inception (a movie I like, but yes, a bit bloated).

  • LAME

Is there any other Superman film?

    This is THE Superman film.

  • jmed

Desperate for a Superman movie where Superman is not a “goody kind hero” towards the bad guys. We need a scene like the first slow-mo fight scene in 300. Something were Superman just goes berserk and beats the living crap out of the bad guys before they even realize what is going on.

    • The Train!

are you serious? does the canonical character of superman matter at all, or do you just want it to be a badass in tights? superman is not (often) a berserker. superman believes in justice and mercy, he doesn’t beat people to within an inch of their lives.

  • Tony

I still wonder why it is still difficult to take Superman seriously. I mean Batman has been updated, but Superman still has his underwear over his pants.

  • Brett

I hope we don’t have to suffer through another origin or more of General Zod.

  • shasplim

Sounds to me like we’ll be treated to another hour and twenty minutes of origin story before anybody gets the chance to throw a punch.

Superman is not Batman. The tone of their characters and stories are entirely different. Using Nolan’s films as a template for “Superman Begins” sounds like a gigantic misstep.

    • Jonathan

origin stories are much more interesting. And last time I checked, general zod and a superman origin story have only made it to screen ONCE and it was more than 30 fucking years ago.

      Get over it.

  • Willis

I’m betting Snyder will do the first, and Nolan will do the second following a “mediocre” Superman.. and Nolan being done with Batman..

If it will be a Watchmen-like, I will let it go.
You cannot compare the genius of Nolan to this horrible 300 doer.

  • googoodollsfan

everyone write down how many times you’ve seen 300.

the number you write down, is a measure of how gay you are

    • The Train!

this is always a useful strategy in any conversation, regardless of the situation.

      • fred

Never been able to watch 300 entirely even one time.
that movie was dull compared to Troy and the like.
        I’m more into realism.
So, at this point, im pretty freaking out since all Snyder’s movies were dull and lame.
