Director Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty has stirred up quite a lot of awards buzz lately, thanks in part to Jessica Chastain’s performance. Chastain is front and center in this final trailer for the picture. There’s plenty of new footage to go around in addition to the reveal of more side-plots, since we already know how the operation to kill Osama bin Laden worked out. The added musical accompaniment of a children’s choir singing Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” puts this thing over the top; I wish it was in theaters right now.

Written by Mark Boal, Zero Dark Thirty also stars Kyle Chandler, Chris Pratt, Mark Strong, Scott Adkins, Joel Edgerton and James Gandolfini.  The film opens in limited release on December 19th, then expands nationwide on January 11th. Hit the jump to watch the powerful final trailer.

Here’s the synopsis for Zero Dark Thirty:

For a decade, an elite team of intelligence and military operatives, working in secret across the globe, devoted themselves to a single goal: to find and eliminate Osama bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty reunites the Oscar(R) winning team of director-producer Kathryn Bigelow and writer-producer Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) for the story of history’s greatest manhunt for the world’s most dangerous man.

I saw this movie a couple of days ago and found It decidedly disappointing. It plays like a condensed season of Homeland but without all of the interesting emotional drama. The film is a bit of an episodic mess. The main character is TOTALLY passive in the first and last 25 minutes and her stoic performance does little to impress. I know this movie is going to clean up come awards season but that’s only because it’s engineered to be award bait.

In all fairness, it’s okay if the main character is passive during the first act, as that is what establishes the characters. The first act introduces us to the major characters. Obviously we need to see the main character doing something that immediately tells us who they are, so they can’t remain passive throughout the whole first act. But I get what you’re saying. Although I am quite looking forward to this.

Well by passive I mean she has fewer than ten lines and does nothing but watch things happen around her. Very little is revealed about her character and the world she comes from, which is the whole objective of the first act. You establish the character and their world, something disrupts their world and then you watch the character change through out the film. How do you know if a character is changing if you don’t know anything or very little about the character to begin with?

LOL, you guys embedded the wrong one.

Highlights her performance? HUH? she doesn’t say one word. If that is highlighting a performance by just being silent then I have much to learn about the art of acting. I realize facial expressions are part of what helps sell the actor to the viewer, but all in all, the higher percentage of why we can start to relate to them is by them speaking to us in character.

Does anyone actually believe the most wanted man in the world was captured, killed then taken to sea and buried? And without any recorded proof? Avoid this Neo con crap (unless you’re a member of the Tea Party).

I heard that the government refused to show images of the body, cuz they’re afraid that the terrorists will use the images as their propaganda.

      • Willie

Yeah, riiiigth… sure, that was the reason. -___-

I don’t believe he had existed at all. And 9/11 is inside job.

But movie is a movie. I wish it was just fiction story like Hurt Locker.

Now, besides artistic quality, it’s a simple propaganda, a tool, to make people believe – Osama was real historic figure, and people would argue about chopper model used in operation and how many shots being fired, tortures and other crap instead of seeing the whole scale. We got our Wag the Dog, not the first, not the last time.

Any one else notice that the song being sung by the choir is Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”. Pretty dang cool. Great trailer.

I have to say it looks like Homeland, a crazy, a bit off the rails, female lead goes above and beyond because of an obsession with catching one man. (Bin Laden/Abu Nazir) Sure it will be good and well crafted, however I think it will just feel like hurt locker did, a vehicle for winning awards.. No one talks about that movie anymore, or really cares..

  • James D

    It’s not a children’s choir, it’s a female choir called Scala.

Another mediocre fest from miss Bigelow. Mediocre movie with a very pernicious Agenda behind it.
