Earlier this year, we reported that Will Smith and his son, Jaden Smith would be co-starring in director M. Night Shyamalan’s new sci-fi project, 1000 A. E. Now, Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) and Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) are in early talks to join the picture as well. Depending on whether or not the deals are worked out, Kravitz would play Smith’s daughter and Okonedo would play his wife (take that, Willow and Jada).
The plot of 1000 A. E. is “set 1,000 years into the future, where a young boy navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.” The script was co-written by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli), Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and, you guessed it, Shyamalan himself. 1000 A.E. is schedule to hit theaters on June 7th, 2013. Hit the jump for more.
THR reports that Kravitz and Okonedo are in talks to fill out the Smith family. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing all the Smiths united on the big screen to act out a sci-fi family action-adventure: the conflict of 1000 A.E. involves the father and son team crash-landing on an inhospitable future Earth, in which the failed-warrior son must rescue the heroic father. And that’s not to take anything away from Kravitz or Okonedo, I just think it would be interesting to see the First Family of Hollywood in a project together.
Kravitz was recently honored with a “rising star” award at the Bahamas International Film Festival and is starring in the indie drama, Yelling to the Sky. She is also planning to shoot the fourth Mad Max movie, Fury Road next year. Okonedo has recently appeared in the U.K. shows Doctor Who and Criminal Justice. With Columbia planning to start production in early 2012, the real question is: will this be another Shyamalan flop or a stepping stone on his return to relevance?
