Everyone knows that a good shark movie is hard to come by. The only ones that were ever considered good or decent were Jaws, 47 Meters Down, or The Meg, but even then, some of those are worth watching once.

Most shark movies suffer from commonly used — overused, really — tropes and poor plotting. However, that is one mistake everyone makes: the audience takes these shark movies too seriously. The real way to enjoy these movies is to sit back, shut your brain off, and enjoy their ridiculousness.

'Noah’s Shark' (2021)

Noah's Shark Cropped

If you thought Sharknado was bad, prepare yourself for this one. Noah’s Shark is about an exorcist and a filmmaker who are helping a possessed girl. However, after some discoveries are made, and an accusation is thrown at the priest, the priest loses his (confirmed to be possessed) client. Afterward, the priest and filmmaker discover another possessed object — a piece of wood from a shipwreck — cursed by Noah’s shark. Following this discovery, the priest and the filmmaker’s team set out to find Noah’s ark, which a cursed, prehistoric white shark guards.

Noah’s Shark is terrible in all ways possible. The plot is all over the place, as it switches from exorcisms and possessions to a cursed ancient shark that was alive when Noah was around. The acting, CGI, and sound design are all bad, as a painfully obvious plastic shark is used to carry out the attacks and murders. However, all of this goofiness serves to make the film enjoyable.

'Sharks of the Corn' (2021)

Sharks of the corn shark killing people Cropped

Sharks of the Corn starts off with a man and his girlfriend. He has won a corndog-eating contest, and they decide to play strip-and-go-seek. His girlfriend runs off into the cornfields, stripping off her clothes, and he — after drinking so much — falls asleep atop a sharkcrow (a scarecrow but with a shark mask). As she traverses the cornfield by herself, she looks over her shoulder and discovers a shark is chasing after her and kills her. At the same time, a man possessed by the goddess of great white sharks is killing women left and right using the jaws of an ancient shark.

Like Noah’s Shark, Shark of the Corn is a low-budget film relying on poor cinematography and a poorer storyline. Still, the silliness of seeing sharks swimming in the cornfields is fantastically funny imagery. But like other films, the viewer isn’t watching a low-budget shark film for its plot but rather for the laughs elicited in silly scenarios. After all, who expects a shark — or several of them — in a random cornfield terrorizing people?

'Santa Jaws' (2018)

Santa Jaws Killing Cody's Brother Cropped

Santa Jaws is a Christmas film that follows aspiring comic book artist Cody who finds himself in trouble on Christmas Eve after posting something inappropriate online. That same night, Cody receives a gift: a mysterious pen which he uses to draw one of his newest creations, Santa Jaws. The following morning, chaos ensues, and Cody begins losing everyone he loves to the unstoppable Santa Jaws, who has somehow come to life.

Santa Jaws is a surprisingly higher budget shark film than the previous two. It has a solid cast of characters that seem to grow and develop like any ordinary high-budget film, and unlike some of the more obvious shark films, this one had a somewhat surprise of a twist and a convincing shark swarming the waters.

'Bad CGI Sharks' (2019)

bad cgi sharks shark swimming in living room Cropped

Bad CGI Sharks is a movie that follows Mathew, who has learned that his mother is sending his brother, Jason, to live with him. Estranged and distant, Mathew reluctantly takes in his older brother, whom he once shared a dream with, that dream of them wanting to bring their shark movie to life. Soon enough, their dream becomes frighteningly real as a poorly rendered CGI shark hunts them down. It’s up to Jason and Mathew to put an end to this CGI shark before it’s too late.

Despite the movie, and even though it's not Jaws, Bad CGI Sharks is a gem of a shark film. It knows it’s a bad shark film and cuts no corners in showing the audience this. But the film has a lot of fun in making a mockery of shark movies. Bad CGI Sharks is a fun movie that never takes itself seriously and implements humor consistently throughout the film.

'Sand Sharks' (2011)

Sand Sharks Cover Woman Sleeping on Beach Above Shark Cropped

Sand Sharks is another movie with sharks existing and swarming where they’re not supposed to. The son of a mayor, Jimmy, returns to his hometown to throw a party on a beach. Before this, men riding dirt bikes at the beginning of the film were murdered, and the sheriff is investigating these deaths. This investigation leads to growing concern about a shark attack, but many brush this off. It’s only later on, when Jimmy proceeds with the party, that people are being devoured left and right by sand sharks.

Sand Sharks has a cast the audience will like and enjoy. There are plenty of moments where the audience will roll their eyes in disbelief, and there are scenes where some of the less likable characters—Jimmy, for example—have their moments to shine in the redemption spotlight. It’s silly, but it’s also an enjoyable film to watch if you're looking for odd shark movies.

'Avalanche Sharks' (2014)

Avalanche Sharks Shark jumping out of snow and attacking skiier Cropped

Avalanche Sharks is yet another film where sharks swarm in bizarre places that one would never expect. Sharks swarm the snowy mountains at a ski resort where people are on Spring Break. After a giant avalanche, an ancient landmark is disturbed, waking up a pack of prehistoric sharks, attacking every skier in sight. Those who remain must survive or be eaten alive.

Avalanche Sharks makes a reference to Sand Sharks, making it an indirect sequel, technically. Regardless, Avalanche Sharks stands alone as a comedic movie. Although unrealistic like most shark films, Avalanche Shark has a fun cast of characters that you love to hate and features a satisfying conclusion to its story.

'Virus Shark' (2021)

Virus Shark Movie Poster Cropped

Virus Shark is a movie with researchers living and working in an underwater lab, which keeps them safe from the virus in the outside world. The place is seemingly falling apart at the same time, and a researcher finds a cure for the virus caused by the shark bites, which has affected most of humanity.

Most of the silliness in Virus Shark comes from the characters and their performances. The movie follows a motley crew, consisting of a security guard who has ridiculous-looking bleached hair, a maintenance man who is constantly ignored, and three researchers that make little sense. Not to mention, plenty of the props are obviously fake, like the gun used by the security guard, which clearly looks like a toy machine gun; this adds to the silliness of the movie. The characters and the phony shark are so awful that it makes this movie laughable.

'Sharktopus' (2010)

Sharktopus climbing gate and heading down sidewalk Cropped

Yes, that’s right; another “are you kidding me” shark movie. This movie features a cast of unknowns that know how to act, and the movie is about a shark-octopus hybrid genetically created by a scientist and her father as a weapon for the Navy. Eventually, the sharktopus malfunctions from her father’s tinkering and, as a result, break away from them and heads south of the Mexican border, where it begins killing people. It's up to this father-daughter duo (and some others) to find this sharktopus and stop its rampage.

Everyone will love to watch as a unique sharktopus terrorizes people on the beach. Even though a surprising concept (and somewhat hard to believe), shark movie lovers will enjoy watching a sharktopus attack. After all, how often does anyone come across a mysterious shark-octopus hybrid? Ultimately, the titular creature and the cast make the story pretty enjoyable.

'Deep Blue Sea' (1999)

Deep Blue Sea Scientist Bit by shark Cropped

Deep Blue Sea is about genetic scientists working in a lab in the middle of the ocean. The scientists push experimental boundaries on sharks to find a potential cure for Alzheimer’s disease. As they get closer to the cure, a shark attack fatally injures one of the scientists, and it’s a matter of time before the lab — and the remaining crew — are destroyed.

Deep Blue Sea is not your average shark movie. Even though it's one of those "bad-looking" shark movies, the actors are well-known and famous, which is odd for a shark film. Dangerous sharks, storms, and famous stars make this a fun and easy watch.

'Atomic Shark' (2016)

Atomic Shark Shark burning from radiation Cropped

Another low-budget shark film. Atomic Shark takes place on a beach. There are plenty of tourists playing in and out of the water, but unfortunately, the beach is filled with incompetent lifeguards, especially during a time when a shark attacks. Unlike other shark movies, though, this shark is glowing from radiation. The few people who spot the shark end up burnt alive from its radiation. From there, it’s up to the crew of lifeguards to save lives.

Like other shark movies, Atomic Shark enlists a crew of ridiculous but well-developed characters, including a selfie-obsessed lifeguard, the narcissistic head lifeguard, a lazy lifeguard, and an environmentalist. Unlike other shark movies, Atomic Shark makes fun of typical shark movie tropes, such as having an exaggerated bad cast of characters, an unbelievably bad CGI atomic shark, and a plot that hardly makes sense. But that’s what makes this shark movie so great (and maybe even the best).
