The trailers for Syfy’s 12 Monkeys are solid enough, but they certainly don’t prove that we need a small screen rendition of the 1995 Terry Gilliam film. However, the first nine minutes of the show just surfaced and while there are a few hiccups here and there, the material is far more captivating than I expected. Aaron Stanford leads as James Cole, a man from the post-apocalyptic future who must go back in time to stop a deadly plague and save billions of lives. Stanford turned Birkhoff into one of Nikita’s strongest characters over the course of the show’s four-season run so I’m thrilled to see him headlining 12 Monkeys, and based on his performance in these first few minutes, he really deserved the opportunity.

Hit the jump to check out the first nine minutes of the 12 Monkeys TV show. The series premieres at 9pm on January 16th and also stars Amanda Schull, Kirk Acevedo, Barbara Sukowa, Noah Bean, Tom Noonan, Emily Hampshire and Zeljko Ivanek.
