Maude Apatow's Lexi Howard may be the most underappreciated character in HBO's Euphoria She remains in the background for the majority of season 1, but even as a minor character she has proven to be one of, if not the most grounded characters in the entire show, and that includes the adults.

Compared to the other teens, Lexi is passive, but she is also smart, funny, and caring. Her passivity should not be mistaken for indifference, and Season 2 does a great job at highlighting that since she has a much more significant role. With one more episode left to go this season, and with Lexi and her play being at the center of it, it's time to finally start recognizing her for what she is, the best character in Euphoria.

Major Spoilers Ahead For 'Euphoria' Seasons 1 And 2

She Smashes The "Good Girl" Trope

Maude Apatow as Lexi Howard in season 1 finale of Euphoria

A whole separate article could be written on the ways Lexi smashes this trope. Being the only teen at East Highland that doesn't have sex and do drugs, she should be labeled as the "good girl" of the show, but she doesn't fit inside that box. Lexi, while being passive and mild-tempered, is not naive, a trait most "good girls" in film and TV are known for. In fact, she is probably the smartest of all the characters, and not just book smart either.

She is extremely perceptive, sitting back and watching the drama unfold throughout Season 1. Someone get this girl some popcorn because it's going to be a long and bumpy ride. Unlike other "good girls," she isn't judgemental or jealous of the more fun, spontaneous "bad girls" that surround her. It's not that she's scared to do drugs and party, it's that she just doesn't care to, at least not regularly. To quote Jules, "some people are just built different."

She Always Has Cassie's Back, Despite Their Major Personality Differences

Maude Apatow and Sydney Sweeney as Lexi and Cassie Howard in Euphoria

The truth is that Lexi has the back of every girl on Euphoria, but being that one of those girls is her pretty, blonde, serial dating sister truly shows how patient and loyal she is. To be fair, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) isn't much of a struggle in Season 1, but Season 2 is a different story. Either way, Lexi always shows up for her sister, even though she drives her crazy at times.

Lexi distracted McKay at Kat's Halloween party when Cassie and Daniel were making out, and she accompanied Cassie to her abortion, along with their mother. She spends the majority of the Season 2 premiere looking for Cassie after a drunken dispute leads to her jumping out of Lex's car, and she knows that something is up with Cass right after the New Year's Eve party, and that was before Cass started to publicly unravel.

She Dressed Up As Bob Ross For Halloween

Need we say more? Lexi pulled a Cady Heron when she came to Kat's Halloween party not dressed in lingerie and some form of animal ears. When her mother jokes with her that the point of Halloween is to look attractive, she vehemently disagrees. One of Lexi's greatest traits is that she's pretty accepting of who she is, and doesn't often try to change to fit other peoples' standards.

Additionally, in this episode, she helps Rue intimidate some kid who's smoking weed with Gia, and it's pretty hilarious to watch Lexi get tough in her Bob Ross getup.

She's Rue's Ride Or Die

Zendaya and Maude Apatow as Rue Bennett and Lexi Howard in Euphoria, solving a case

Rue (Zendaya) doesn't always treat the people in her life very well, and Lexi is no exception. Despite that, Lexi is always there for her. She gives drug-free urine to Rue in the pilot episode to help her fake a drug test, and she stands by her the whole time during Rue's struggle with opiate addiction.

Lexi is passive, but she's not weak. As her character develops in season 2 we start to see her loyalty to Rue shift, and her devotion to her isn't proven by helping her hide the fact that she does drugs, but to do whatever she can in her power to help her get off drugs, including keeping Rue's mother in the loop. And let's not forget that Lexi is Rue's partner in crime when Rue is trying to crack the case of Nate and Jules. This duo is iconic.

Her Face When Cassie Wants To Tell Her Boyfriend She Made Out With Someone Else

Lexi cringe face in euphoria

Perhaps it isn't wise to define an entire character by a two-second-long expression that appears in one very short scene, but it just feels so right. When Cassie considers telling McKay about what happened with Daniel, she brings the topic up with her trusty council of Maddy, Kat, BB, and Lexi, and everyone agrees she should just drop it.

Cassie claims she wants to be honest with Mckay, and Lexi's face is priceless. Frankly, it just feels like that's Lexi's reaction to pretty much everything that goes on in this show, and boy is it appropriate. Anyway, everyone agrees that Cassie's plan is pointless and Lexi herself says that if she were in that position she wouldn't tell. Yet another moment of Lexi doing her best to help Cassie deal with her problems. She does deserve a medal.

She Stole Fezco's Heart

Arguably the best thing about Season 2 is Fezco (Angus Cloud) and Lexi's blossoming romance. Not only is it beyond adorable, but it also makes sense. Lexi is by far the most chill of all the teens in Euphoria, and Fezco, the drug dealer with a heart of gold, does his best to mitigate the drama, while also trying to run his business.

The best thing about Lexi and Fez's interactions is that Lexi in no way judges Fez for dealing, and she doesn't think he's a bad person. This is exemplified when she kept Fez's identity a secret when Cal Jacobs (Eric Dane) came knocking, curious about what happened to his son at the party. She refused to be intimidated by him and his threats to call the police, unlike her sister. Poor Cassie folded like a piece of paper.

Her Play Deserves A Tony

Maude Apatow as Lexi Howard in Euphoria

Being the passive observer finally pays off when Lexi puts on a play that chronicles the events leading up to and during Euphoria. Lexi's play is important for several reasons. Firstly, watching her run around and yell at the lighting people is awesome since she's usually a very timid person. She's coming into her own. Secondly, the play gives the audience, both on-screen and off-screen, a chance to understand Lexi, who up until this point has been a background character.

Thirdly, we get some insight into her and Rue's relationship before the show began, something that hasn't been explored at length. One particular scene shows how Rue inspired Lexi to not care what others thought of her, and the pain of drifting apart from childhood friends. Lastly, she portrayed Nate and the football locker room as accurately as she could with a homoerotic, and frankly riveting, rendition of a very popular Bonnie Tyler song. Not all heroes wear capes.
