If you haven't been keeping up with the latest season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, you have a couple of days to remedy that before the newly space-based series' return this Friday. The show made quite the leap this season, taking the title team way out of their depths and giving the action-drama a whole new tone from the previous four seasons. I'm very excited to see where things end up in Season 5--and to see what the creative team has in store for viewers in Episode 100, arriving Friday, March 9th--but many are wondering if this season will be the last for the Agents.

In a chat with TV Line during a celebration for the upcoming 100th episode, co-writers Jed Whedon and Maurisa Tancharoen addressed this milestone along with revealing just where they're at in the writing process regarding the Season 5 finale. It should come as no surprise to those of you who have been following Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. since the beginning to hear that this season's finale might just be the series finale for the show. That's been speculated at the end of just about every season so far. But with the events of Season 5 being truly out of this world, could the writers have backed themselves into a corner?

When it comes to writing the Season 5 finale, Whedon said, “We are in process.” Tancharoen clarified that a bit, saying “We know what it is.” And what it is, exactly, remains to be seen, but Tancharoen also mentioned that it could serve as either the season or series finale, as mentioned.

Whedon continued: “Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end. We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way. We can certainly pivot and there are certain things that we’re putting in that, at the last minute, could be adjusted. But we know at the end we’re not moving off that mark. We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way.”

I happen to like this plan of attack since it lets the writers leave it all on the screen rather than holding something back just in case they get renewed. Better to go for broke only to have to come up with another idea for a future series than never get the chance to show your best stuff by playing a waiting game. We'll see how this pans out later this season.

Tancharoen also teased the upcoming 100th episode, which airs on Friday, March 9th saying, “It’s definitely an emotional game changer.”

Whedon elaborated: “I think that nothing will be the same after [Episode 100, so that I guess is the definition of a game changer.”
