It’s the Winter Finale and and the stakes have never been higher. After crossing through the porta,l Fitz is leading Ward and his team across the alien landscape - a landscape that just happens to feature an ancient statue of the Hydra symbol. Fitz takes them to Will who has been injured in a fight with the being that inhabits the planet. Will eventually leads them to the next portal opening, but before they get there, both he and Fitz escape Hydra. Unbeknownst to all, Coulson has also made his way to the planet. He tracks down Ward and takes him prisoner.
Fitz soon discovers that Will isn’t who he says he is. Will has died and has been taken over by the ancient being. As Fitz’s fights “Will,” Coulson finally has his one-on-one brawl with Ward. Eventually Coulson gets the upper hand, so to speak, and crushes Ward’s chest. Meanwhile, back on earth the S.H.I.E.L.D. team lead by Mack attacks the Hydra castle. Simmons manages to escape and frees Andrew/Lash to aide her. There’s a debate whether or not to destroy the portal before Coulson can return, to keep the evil from escaping. Luckily at the last minute they all make it out, just as Mack gives the order to blow up the castle.
On the recap show the crew discuss, now that Ward is being controlled by the ancient being, where will he fit in for the future of the show? Also was this Malick’s plan all along? Lash is back on the loose killing Inhumans. Was Simmons right to let him out? And will May have to once again take him out? Lincoln had argued destroying the portal earlier and the crew wonders if this was the smarter call. Most all they breakdown the Simmons/Fitz romance and wonder if he will always be second in her life.
