Although the development on the adaptation of Judith Viorst's children's book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is fairly well along, Fox will reportedly shop the project to other studios.  The live-action picture was set to star Steve Carell as "Ben," who is a new character introduced to fill out the original story.  Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right) was also previously in place to direct from a script she co-wrote with Rob Lieber.  Hit the jump for more on Carell's character and what this recent turnaround means for the picture.Deadline reports that Fox was unhappy with the budget for Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and will shop the project immediately with the above-mentioned talent intact.  Carell will play Alexander's father on a day that goes rather wrong for the boy to say the least. Here’s the synopsis for Judith Viorst and Ray Cruz‘ Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day:

He could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. He went to sleep with gum in his mouth and woke up with gum in his hair. When he got out of bed, he tripped over his skateboard and by mistake dropped his sweater in the sink while the water was running. He could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Nothing at all was right. Everything went wrong, right down to lima beans for supper and kissing on TV.

What do you do on a day like that? Well, you may think about going to Australia. You may also be glad to find that some days are like that for other people too. [Amazon]
