DreamWorks hasn’t announced an official release date for The Light Between Oceans, but the film is already building up a level of mystique. Michael Fassbender stars opposite Ex Machina scene-stealer Alicia Vikander in the adaptation of the acclaimed book by author M.L. Stedman. Then there’s the director, Derek Cianfrance, who’s been bolstering his own prestige with Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines. To further enhance the growing anticipation for his latest film, the first image has now debuted online.
The image comes from The Film Stage, which in turn received it from a fan submission. So what more do we know? Well, the film is called The Light Between Oceans. There’s certainly a light, an ocean, and an ocean of sky. It’s pretty spot-on. Vikander stands in the dimmed, lush image as she overlooks the scenery from a seaside cliff:
The book tells the tale of Tom Sherbourne, who takes a job as a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock in Australia. His wife, Isabel, has endured two miscarriages and one stillbirth, but then she discovers a baby crying next to a dead man on a washed-up boat. The couple decide to claim it as their own without considering what devastation it could cause.
It’s a film with no black and whites, it inhabits a grey world and I think that it’s going to be one—which I love—which people will leave the cinema debating the choices that the characters make.
DreamWorks is the releasing The Light Between Oceans, and I was hoping it would be for this year. However, the studio pushed the U.K. release back to January 6, 2017. That most likely means we won’t be seeing this film until later next year, the earliest.
