New Details Emerge for the Second Season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY

     April 19, 2012

Fans of FX’s first season of horror anthology American Horror Story will be happy to hear that we’ve finally got some details regarding the second season.  We previously posted that season one cast members Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe and Sarah Paulson would be returning for a second go-round, as well as the season two addition of Maroon 5’s Adam Levine to the cast.  We already knew, via co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, that the second season would take place on the East Coast at an undisclosed “horror institution,” but now we finally have a little more meat on the bones.  It was previously stated that the actors would be playing characters that were completely the opposite of their roles from season one and it looks like Lange will definitely have some fun with the part she’s been provided.  Hit the jump to find out what it is.

THR reportsAmerican-Horror-Story-Spooky-Little-Girl-Jessica-Lange that American Horror Story producers are presenting their vision of season two next week, so the following details may change before the show’s fall debut.  Curious about Lange’s character?  The Golden Globe-winner will not only be in an institution for the criminally insane, she’ll be running it:

“[Season 2] is set on the East Coast at an institution for the criminally insane that is run by Jessica,” Murphy said.

In a phone interview last fall, Murphy also teased that there were clues in the episode, “Birth,” that would suggest where the season two story might take place:

“something that Sarah Paulson’s character, Billie Dean, says to Jessica and Taissa [Farmiga] as she’s sage-ing the house and talking about places where evil collects: We talk about institutions and prisons and things like that. That was the clue.”

american-horror-story-sarah-paulsonPaulson had more-or-less given the setting away during the press conference at PaleyFest, but now, the insane asylum has been confirmed.   What else can we confirm for season two? Per Murphy:

“It’s a completely different world and has nothing to do with Season 1; there’s not a mention of Season 1. The second season is set in a completely different time period.”

What time period that is, he didn’t say. Season one jumped all over the place, providing dramatized snapshots of iconic moments in 20th century Los Angeles history. Whether this season’s presentation will be more linear and confined to one time period, Murphy isn’t saying.  He did go on to say that, with regard to season one actors:

“The idea is to work with actors that you love and are excited by. The second season, everybody who was announced, there will be other people up on this stage who are not announced who will also be in it but are playing the polar opposite of what they were in the first season in every way.”

Zachary-Quinto-Teddy-Sears-American-Horror-Story-BirthQuinto wouldn’t confirm if he’d be playing one of the criminally insane, but he did sound enthusiastic about returning to the show:

“The notion of coming back and playing something totally different and in a totally different world with many of the same actors, it’s probably one of the more exciting things that has come across my plate in recent years. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Finally, here’s a bit more news on Levine’s character, from Murphy:

“He’s a sexy guy, so he needs to play a sexy guy — but the guy that is different than who you think he would play. I pitched him the part and he listened, slack-jawed, and simply said, ‘I’m in.’ The second season is fun, sexy and baroque. It has a lot of meat to it; it’s a really gritty part. He’s with a girl, and they play characters called The Lovers.”

THR also points out that French actress, Lizzie Brochere (One to Another) will play the antagonist to Lange’s character.  If you haven’t seen all of season one of American Horror Story (first of all, why the hell did you read this far?), go get caught up on all of our previous coverage and episode recaps here.  For current fans, what do you think of the new details?  Are you as excited as I am for this show to return?  Let us know in the comments!
