FX's American Horror Story has already covered the topics of ghosts, serial killers, the criminally insane, Nazis and aliens in such creepy locales as a haunted house, insane asylum and mad scientist's laboratory.  Season three, recently revealed with the title of American Horror Story: Coven, will center on witches and take place partially in New Orleans.  Throughout the second season, it was speculated that creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk would be taking on witches in the upcoming season, based on hints they scattered throughout the Asylum episodes; but this storyline has been in the works for quite a while.  Hit the jump for more.

At PaleyFest 2013, Murphy revealed a bit more about American Horror Story: Coven, not the least of which being that:

“It’s a really cool story that we’ve been talking about for a couple of years actually, and this seemed the year to do it.”

We previously reported that Kathy Bates (Misery) would be joining the TV series as the main antagonist, but Murphy elaborated further (quotes via TV Line), calling her “a bad, bad woman, five times worse than [her] Misery character — which is why she liked it.”  Bates herself said she won't know anything more about her character "until I’ve gotten in and walked around in her shoes yet, but I’m awfully excited.”

If you're excited to see series star Jessica Lange and Bates clash on screen, you're in luck!  Murphy is eager to do just that:

“I wanted to see a lot of scenes of Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates going at it, so that’s what you’re going to see.”

Other returning cast members include Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy and Taissa Farmiga.  Production will shoot on location for the first time and will split time between New Orleans and some other undisclosed, but sure to be spooky, locales:

“The fun thing is researching what are the really haunted places in America, and we have a couple doozy locales.”
