Le the speculation begin! FX has renewed the hit horror anthology series American Horror Story for a sixth season. The Emmy and Golden Globe winning series is currently in the midst of its fifth season, Hotel, and is cleaning up in ratings so another installment was all but a guarantee. As always, the announcement comes without an official title and cast attached, meaning we get to spend the next few months theorizing and scrutinizing episodes for any hint about what the new season has in store.

Could Jessica Lange return to the franchise after skipping the the fifth season to appear on Broadway? Will Lady Gaga come back, or does Ryan Murphy have an entirely new diva in mind for the next installment? Which cast members of the rotating troupe of actors will re-up for another season, and what exciting new talent will come aboard this time around? And, of course, the biggest question -- what fresh hell awaits them?

As a quick recap, we've done BDSM ghosts in Murder House; aliens, nazis, demons and mad doctors in Asylum, witches, zombies and voodoo in Coven, circus freaks and sociopaths in Freakshow, and now we've got serial killers and vampires in Hotel. What ground is there left to cover? American Horror Story: Summer Camp? American Horror Story: ApocalypseAmerican Horror Story: In Space? American Horror Story: Cthulhu? I'll stop there, but it's always fun to speculate where the series will go next. Whatever Murphy decides to do, you can pretty much guarantee it's going to be stylish and backed by a killer cast.

In the Season 6 announcement, FX head John Landgraf commented,

“With the sixth installment coming next year, American Horror Story has unquestionably joined the ranks of television’s landmark series...From Murder House to Hotel, AHS has pioneered a new television form as well becoming FX’s highest rated show -- while also pushing every conceivable boundary of creative excellence and audacity. This is even more remarkable because Ryan and co-creator Brad Falchuk tear up the playbook every year, challenging the entire creative team to come up with something even more spectacular, frightful and entertaining. You could not ask more of an artist, their team or a series and with every new installment they deliver.”

In past seasons Murphy has dropped clues about the direction of the next season, so keep your eyes peeled when American Horror Story: Hotel airs on Wednesday nights. Season 6 is set for 2016. Sound off with your favorite theories in the comments.
