While she’s certainly one of the funniest comedians working today, it appears Amy Schumer is also eager to further flex her dramatic skills onscreen. Per Deadline, the actress has joined the cast of the PTSD drama Thank You For Your Service, though the nature and extent of her role are unspecified. American Sniper screenwriter wrote and is making his directorial debut on the project, which at one point had Steven Spielberg eyeing it as a potential directing vehicle.

Based on the book of the same name by David Finkel, the DreamWorks film follows a group of soldiers returning home from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into civilian life, with Miles Teller leading a cast that includes Haley Bennet, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Joe Cole, Beulah Koale, Scott Haze, Brad Beyer, Omar Dorsey, and Jayson Warner Smith.

Filming just got underway in Atlanta, but it’s unclear how big of a role Schumer might have. She’s incredibly busy at the moment, preparing for her next starring role in a mother-daughter comedy she co-wrote for 20th Century Fox which has Warm Bodies helmer Jonathan Levine directing. She also recently co-wrote an original screenplay with Jennifer Lawrence, which she and Lawrence intend to star in together, and then there’s the next season of her swell Comedy Central series Inside Amy Schumer, which if it keeps with the schedule of the previous seasons, would start airing in April.

One thing that is clear is that Schumer is a genuinely terrific actress, proving with last summer’s Trainwreck that she’s just as skilled when it comes to drama as she is with comedic material. So there’s no question she can deliver in Thank You For Your Service, and I’m eager to see Schumer continue to stretch her acting skills in further feature films. Her turn in Trainwreck was wonderfully complex and nuanced, and I hope this is merely the beginning of a long feature-film career.
