Now's your last chance to catch Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' in theaters since the action-packed anime will only play up until August 12th. It's a good weekend for animated films with Aardman Animation's latest effort Shaun the Sheep Movie also opening in the U.S. and Canada. Another animated feature that opened this weekend and received a bit less fanfare is Khalil Gibran's The Prophet, featuring the voice work of Salma Hayek and Liam Neeson. As a change of pace, we've also got some new looks at the animated Guardians of the Galaxy series coming to Disney XD.

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'

A year ago, Screenvision's U.S. release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods brought in just north of $2.5 million at the box office. A year later and FUNimation Films' Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' has taken in just over $5.5 million as of this writing, and it's still in theaters until the 12th. As Deadline reports, not only has DBZ surpassed the box office take of Aardman Animation film Shaun the Sheep Movie in its U.S. debut, it has moved into the ninth spot on the list of top-grossing domestic anime releases. Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises now sits at number ten with $5.2 million. You can help push the box office take even higher, thereby securing more theatrical releases for anime in the future, by heading out to see Resurrection 'F' this week.

If you're still on the fence about checking this one out, perhaps a pair of clips featuring Goku and Vegeta's often contentious relationship will help you make up your mind:

'Khalil Gibran's The Prophet' Gets U.S. Theatrical Release

Though it debuted at Cannes in May of 2014, the animated feature Khalil Gibran's The Prophet is finally getting its U.S. theatrical release. Not exactly a wide one though. The Prophet has netted $26,000 from just two theaters in its opening weekend. Hayek, who voices Kalima in the film and is also credited as a producer, had a personal interest in bringing the film to life since it was originally introduced to her by her grandfather. Now, the collection of poems from Lebanese author Gibran, which has sold more than 100 million copies since its publication in 1923, is in North American cinemas as an animated feature.

The story of Hayek's Kamila, who is employed as a housekeeper for exiled artist and poet Mustafa (Neeson), acts as a framing device for the poems themselves. Directed by Roger Allers, who also wrote the framing story, each segment of The Prophet is an adaptation of a different poem, each shepherded by a different animation director, among them Academy Award-nominees Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells) and Bill Plympton (Guard Dog). Each poem - including Freedom, Children, Marriage, Work, Eating & Drinking, Love, Good & Evil and Death - has a distinct animation style that ranges from hand-drawn to computer-generated.

Financing for the film, as well as vocal, animation and directorial talent, came from international sources, which Hayek explains as follows:

“I didn't want all the money to come from one place; I didn't want the film to have a country. I wanted to make the film in the sprit of the kind of film that I was making.”

Hayek has a lot more to say about the film and her involvement with it over at THR, so be sure to head there for more.

Aardman Animation's 'Shaun the Sheep Movie' Debuts in the U.S.

Shaun the Sheep Movie originally premiered this past January at Sundance and has been on a festival circuit and global release tour ever since. This weekend, the stop-motion animation film officially opened in U.S. theaters to the tune of $4 million even. It's currently sitting at a 99% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (thanks to one critic out of 108 who thought it to be rotten) with most everyone praising its warmth, humor, and animation quality.  You can meet Shaun in this short featurette, followed by the movie's synopsis:

When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for.  A mix up with the Farmer, a caravan, and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it's up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Animated Series Trailer and Groot Promo

Let's change it up a bit with new looks from the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series. We've been reporting on the promos and character featurettes that Disney XD has been slowly releasing before the series premiere, and we continue that trend with a new trailer and clip. The trailer gives a great sense of tone, level of action, and style of animation viewers of the series can expect, though the very recognizable song does most of the emotional lifting. As for the clip, well you can never have too much Groot.
