Rejoice! Archer is not dead yet. While the Season 7 finale of the FX animated series left things in a very precarious position, the tension was also heightened by the fact that FX had yet to actually renew the series. Had that served as the series finale, it would have been both fitting and highly frustrating, but luckily word arrived today that FX has not only renewed Archer for Season 8, but they’ve tacked on Seasons 9 and 10 as well, giving us a nice even number.

“We can’t say enough about what Adam, Matt and the entire Archer team at Floyd County have done to keep this series so insanely funny and vital through seven seasons,” said Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. “The move to Los Angeles this past season as private detectives was just the latest twist in Archer’s legendary exploits and the next three seasons will to be just as amazing and unpredictable. We are thrilled to continue making great TV with our friends and colleagues at Floyd County.”

This ensures that Archer will remain on the air through 2019, and if I were to guess I’d say that might be the final season for a show that’s had a knack for reinventing itself over and over. Beginning with Season 5, the series left the spy conceit behind to venture into new—and refreshing—territory, with a season-long arc referred to as Archer Vice that saw the cast becoming criminals trying to sell off an insane amount of cocaine. Season 6 saw the series dive into more freelance territory, and Season 7 was a lengthy Sunset Boulevard homage that was an old fashioned detective story.

Where will Archer go for the next three seasons? There’s no telling, but given Adam Reed’s penchant for mixing things up, I can’t wait to find out.
