Now that those pesky winter hiatuses are over, the CW's superhero lineup is back in action (and with a timeslot shift for Legends of Tomorrow to Tuesdays after The Flash). The episodes that kicked off the second half of the seasons for these shows, as well as Arrow and Supergirl, were an odd bunch. On The Flash, the S.T.A.R. Labs team has seemingly learned nothing from Barry's tinkering of the timeline, and are plowing head-first into another plan to change the future. Arrow started things off with a quiet episode that found the character's each contemplating who they really are in the wake of a brutal season. The Legends went the other way with things, with a goofy episode that was all about fan service and a love of George Lucas movies. Supergirl, though, had perhaps the strangest outing of the bunch, in and episode that was narratively all over the place.

Below you'll find the trailers for the episodes that will follow-up these premieres, and it looks like most are starting to settle in with their respective plot arcs for the rest of the season, which I'll talk about more in depth below:

Supergirl: "We Can Be Heroes"

It looks like Supergirl is getting pretty dark this week thanks to the return of Livewire, who is out to kill Kara and anyone who stands in her way. Livewire is one of the few recurring minor villains in the CW's DC universe, although I do like the idea of some of them coming back (not just the Big Bads like the Legion of Doom members, but ones like Black Siren, etc).

Also it looks like Kara will get to do some badass fighting in this episode, packing more of a punch than Barry. Lest we forget, Barry also fought Livewire in The Flash / Supergirl crossover episode last year. If you started Supergirl in Season 2, I do encourage you to go back and watch that hour -- it's adorable.

The Flash: "Dead or Alive"

HR really got picked on in the first episode since the winter hiatus, but it looks like "Dead or Alive" will give him something to do besides annoy the rest of his S.T.A.R. labs pals. He and Cisco seemed to have patched things up enough in that last episode, too, for Cisco to defend HR in a trial by combat (which he doesn't seem to understand means a fight to the death, because per usual he's blinded by an ill-fated crush -- though I'm still rooting for him!)

"Dead or Alive" looks like a pretty goofy episode, which can be when The Flash is at its best (also happy to see Julian as a reliable member of the team now!) All of the weight of Barry & Co trying to change the future again to save Iris is also murky territory given everything that has happened since Flashpoint, so some time away from that focusing on something else might do us all some good. But most importantly ... Why is HR on the lam?!

Legends of Tomorrow: "The Legion of Doom"

After Legends of Tomorrow solidified its break with Season 1 by seeming to openly acknowledge how awful Vandal Savage was as a villain, I am back on board with this show. I also am pretty happy with how the Legion of Doom has assembled, and that the show has introduced an artifact for the Legends to fight them over (although I'm hoping the Legion doesn't end with the close of this season -- I think it's exactly what this show needs).

In the new trailer, the Legends are figuring out how to save the amnesiac 1967-version of Rip Hunter, even though I say he's probably better left to his own devices (unless he never recovers his memory, securing Sara as the ship's captain. Honestly, there's not really a place for him on this team anymore. Harsh truths, y'all).

Anyway, it looks like we'll also get some more of the Legion of Doom (and Sara accepting that name!) being diabolical next week, which is great. I love their team-up (one which Captain Cold should be joining eventually ...)

Arrow: "Second Chances"

So as we now know for sure, even though the teaser for the episode already spoiled it for us, Laurel Lance returned ... but as Earth-2 Laurel a.k.a. Black Siren, not the resurrected Earth Laurel. Though many of us guessed that Black Siren might have a redemptive arc this season and end up joining (something Oliver seemed to want throughout the episode), Team Arrow apparently doesn't have the patience for that (even though Oliver is still keeping her close), and looks to find a new recruit instead.

Thus, Oliver is spearheading an effort to find a new Black Canary, which the end of "Who Are You?" already teased. In the new trailer, despite finding many qualified badass women (who feel like they should spinoff into their own vigilante show), Oliver insists that filling the position is based more on a feeling. Finding a shrieking meta doesn't hurt either, it seems.
