A couple of new images from the Assassin’s Creed movie have been released online. Whlie this summer’s Warcraft didn’t break the video game movie curse insofar as being our first critically and commercially acclaimed video game adaptation, I’ve still got high hopes for Assassin’s Creed. What’s curious about this Ubisoft adaptation is that star Michael Fassbender was involved at the ground floor as the film’s producer, helping to hone the script to a story worth telling and enlisting his Macbeth director Justin Kurzel to take the helm, who then in turn brought along his tremendous cinematographer Adam Arkapaw.

The story of this Assassin’s Creed movie finds Fassbender playing Callum Lynch, a Texas inmate on death row for murder who finds himself whisked away to the Abstergo facility in Spain, where Marion Cotillard’s Sofia Rifkken is conducting a series of experiments to try and identify where violence begins. Lynch is one of several patients at Abstergo, and he soon finds himself face to face with the Animus, a device that uses DNA technology to allow the user to experience the lives of past ancestors. Lynch is then regressed into the body of his 15th century ancestor Aguilar, an Assassin on the hunt for the all-important Artifact.

These new images show off both Callum Lynch and Aguilar, and I’m really loving the aesthetic that Kurzel and Arkapaw have put together here, especially as it relates to differentiating the Abstergo-set scenes from the scenes inside the Animus.

If you’re really itching to know more about the film, be sure to check out my full set visit report from when I visited the film’s London set late last year, as well as my interviews with Fassbender and Kurzel about the movie. Take a look at the new images below, via the film’s official Twitter. Assassin’s Creed also stars Jeremy Irons, Michael K. Williams, and Brendan Gleeson and opens in theaters on December 21st.
