You’ve probably noticed by now the severe lack of video games associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe — apart from the mobile gaming offerings, of course. Several years ago, we might have received a first-person superhero action game tied to Marvel’s The Avengers from THQ. But when THQ Australia closed, so did the chances of making this game. At least we now know what could have been, though, thanks to some new footage of the project.

The DidYouKnowGaming? YouTube channel and Unseen64, an independent online archive of video game history, released a new video delving into the canceled game, and it’s here where we see what could have been. The basic gist was that players could control Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, or Captain America, with Black Widow and Hawkeye featured as unlockable players. Comic writer Brian Michael Bendis was said to be on board for the game with an original story separate from, but inspired by, the movie featuring a larger cast of villains and heroes.

Check out the video below:

The story reportedly centered around the Avengers embarking on an international mission to stop a Skrull invasion. Bendis, who wrote the Secret Invasion storyline in the comics, was using this as inspiration. Shown in concept art and test graphics, these aliens used their shapeshifting abilities to mimic the powers of the heroes, including Wolverine and Fantastic Four versions. In addition, the Skrull Queen, Veranke, would have shifted into Spider-Woman, while more concept art shows a rendering of Captain Marvel, who was another unlockable character alongside War Machine.

The Avengers game would have been available for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Wii U, just to rub even more salt into our open wounds. And while we still have games like Marvel Heroes, the first-person style would have given the Marvel gaming world an added edge.
