‘Bad Santa 2’: New Red-Band Trailer Adds Plenty of Swearing to Your Holiday Cheer

     September 21, 2016

Broad Green Pictures and Miramax have released a new Bad Santa 2 red-band trailer. In the upcoming sequel, Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) returns to put on his Santa gear and team up with his estranged mother (Kathy Bates) and former partner Marcus (Tony Cox) to rob a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve.

Comedy sequels are tough, and they’re even tougher when you don’t know why the original film worked. It looks like director Mark Waters (Heathers) and screenwriters Johnny Rosenthal and Shauna Cross are under the impression that the first movie was a success because a man who dressed like Santa Claus swore a lot. The swearing was part of the reason the first movie was funny, but the movie worked because it had a bit of melancholy to it as well. It humanized Willie, but it looks like Bad Santa 2 is just making him a repository for filthy one-liners. Hopefully, there’s more depth to this film than this trailer is letting on.

Check out the Bad Santa 2 red-band trailer below. The film opens November 23rd and also stars Christina Hendricks and Brett Kelly.

Here’s the official synopsis for Bad Santa 2:

BAD SANTA 2 returns Academy Award®-winner BILLY BOB THORNTON to the screen as America’s favorite anti-hero, Willie Soke. Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus (TONY COX), to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is ‘the kid’ – chubby and cheery Thurman Merman (BRETT KELLY), a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie’s sliver of humanity.

Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Academy Award®, Golden Globe and Emmy-winner KATHY BATES, as Willie’s horror story of a mother, Sunny Soke. A super butch super bitch, Sunny raises the bar for the gang’s ambitions, while somehow lowering the standards of criminal behavior. Willie is further burdened by lusting after the curvaceous and prim Diane, played by Emmy Award-nominee CHRISTINA HENDRICKS, the charity director with a heart of gold and libido of steel.

You better watch out: BAD SANTA 2 is coming to town.
