Adult Swim has renewed two fan-favorite series for second seasons. The animated comedies Birdgirl and Smiling Friends have received new season orders for the upcoming year. Both shows are original to Adult Swim, which has become one of the most popular programming block on Cartoon Network, thanks to its assortment of adult animated shows like Rick and Morty, Venture Bros, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Both shows debuted last year on the network. Birdgirl, starring Paget Brewster in the titular role, is a spinoff of other much-beloved Adult Swim show Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. Birdgirl follows Judy Ken Sebben (Brewster) as she takes over her late father’s company Sebben & Sebben Worldwide, a law firm in the original series, however, it appears to be more of a nonsensical tech company in this iteration. Along with her CEO duties, Judy must also balance her life as nighttime crime-fighter Birdgirl.

Brewster originated the role in the 2001 series as a recurring character. Making up Judy’s team of co-workers and fellow crime fighters is Rob Delaney, Kether Donohue, John Doman, Negin Farsad, Tony Hale, and River L. Ramirez. According to Adult Swim, the second season will see Judy and the team tackle ethics in modern corporations, cancel culture, health fads, and lots of mistakes they will fail to learn from. Sometimes it’s about making new problems before you can solve old ones according to this gang. The first season contained 6 episodes which premiered weekly on Sunday nights since April 4, 2021.

The series debuted its eight episodes in last month, following a small company dedicated to bringing happiness to the world, with varying degrees of success. The show’s pilot, where aired April Fool’s Day 2020 grabbed its audience with its dark humor and surreal visual gags. Despite its two-year delay, Smiling Friends has clearly earned its place in the programming block with its quick second season renewal. Show creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack voice most major and recurring characters, with assistance from Marc M. as the fictional company’s CEO.

While no release window has been announced for Smiling Friends, fans of Birdgirl can expect to see the winged superhero sometime this summer. As Adult Swim has a habit of premiering original shows on Sunday nights, it’s likely these shows will not air at the same time, or will debut in relatively close time slots. Both Birdgirl and Smiling Friends are available to stream on HBO Max.
