Sad Ben Affleck might be plastered all over your Facebook and Twitter feeds but the star has very little to be sad about in terms of the fiscal success of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Zack Snyder's DC adaptation took in some $82 million at the box office yesterday, and is now looking at a possible $170 million weekend with eyes towards taking the biggest March opening record, which is currently held by the first Hunger Games entry.

This, frankly, is not super surprising. Even with the tonnage of bad press, the title of the movie alone, with some help from the contingency of Man of Steel fans, guaranteed that this movie was going to do major business. Whether or not the movie is good doesn't really matter for the opening weekend, but may very well become an interesting factor when it comes to its takes on subsequent weekends. I foresee a major dip in its second weekend, as reactions from die-hard fans of these characters has been largely quite negative as well, but we'll have to wait to see about that.

Regardless, Batman v Superman is doing some major work at regaining its sizable $250 million budget, but its not the only fighter on the stage. The only other wide release opening this weekend is My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, which is doing some impressive work on a far smaller scale with a far smaller budget. The sequel to the early-aughts sleeper hit took in some $7.2 million on Friday, placing it in third place behind the still-rollicking Zootopia, which took in healthy $9.5 million dollars on Friday, pointing towards another successful $20+ million  weekend.

Finally, in fourth place, there was the beleaguered Allegiant, which took in $3.7 million on Friday, just barely pulling out in front of the faith-based Miracles from Heaven, which finished Friday with $3.3 million. We'll be back tomorrow to see how the Saturday numbers come out.

Here's the Friday estimates for the top five films at the box office, according to BOM:
