In 2014, news got out that Universal was working on a new Battlestar Galactica movie with the creator of the original series, Glen Larson, and Transcendence screenwriter Jack Paglen. However, not much movement has been made on this front since Larson’s passing later that year. Now it seems like the project is moving forward again with three new producers.

As first reported by the Tracking Board and confirmed by Variety, Michael De Luca (who produced Fifty Shades of Grey for the studio), Scott Stuber, and Dylan Clark will produce the sci-fi film. The latter pair hail from Bluegrass Films, which is based at Universal. The trade notes that De Luca has a three-year first-look deal with the studio, part of which entails him producing the next two sequels to Fifty Shades.

According to reports, the film has been in development as far back as 1999, though it was put on hold when Syfy launched a reimagined miniseries in 2003. The original series that aired in the late ‘70s followed a war between humans and a robotic race called Cylons. Led by the Galactica warship, the humans were on a search for a mythic 13th planet known as Earth, and it’s this series from where the film is reportedly pulling its source material. The most recent iteration of the franchise came in 2010 with the series Caprica, which took place 60 years before the events of Battlestar.

X-Men movie director Bryan Singer was circling an adaptation a while back, and he told Collider that John Orloff (Anonymous) was on board to write the script. He, of course, has since moved on to other projects, mainly to direct X-Men: The Last Stand when Matthew Vaughn dropped out. He’s since finished up the latest X-Men trilogy and will work next on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
