I hope you’re ready to be emotionally wrecked after watching this movie, because if the trailer is any indication, Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation is going to be a visually stunning and brutally haunting piece of cinema.
The movie, based on a book of the same name by the Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala, follows the story of Agu (Abraham Attah), whose parents are killed during a civil war in his West African nation. From there he falls in with Idris Elba’s Commandant, a warlord who develops child soldiers into killers at his command.
Fukunaga was the luminary who gave True Detective’s first season its gorgeous and memorable style, and it looks like Beasts of No Nation will feature much of the same kind of cinematic beauty, even in the midst of such brutal violence. This trailer also highlights Elba’s role, which seems like it will be incredibly powerful and completely mesmerizing. The Commandant talks of victory, family, love, and so much more, but all of it is a complex psychological game to create his own army of death. Basically, this looks absolutely extraordinary. The movie will premiere on Netflix and in select theaters on October 16th.
