Disney continues to fill the cast for its live-action Beauty and the Beast, and they’ve found a familiar face to play Gaston’s sidekick. THR reports that Josh Gad is in final negotiations to join director Bill Condon’s (Dreamgirls) fairy tale update in the role of Le Fou, the buffoonish sidekick to the smarmy Gaston. Emma Watson is onboard as Belle, Downton Abbey alum Dan Stevens recently signed on as the Beast/Prince, and Luke Evans is set to play Gaston, so this cast is coming together rather nicely. Now, to fill the all-important roles of the mansion’s servants.
The character of Le Fou was actually created for Disney’s 1991 animated film, signaling that Condon’s movie will share plenty of similarities to that Best Picture-nominated musical. Gad, of course, found fame in another Disney sidekick role recently: that of Frozen’s loveable snowman Olaf. The comedian rose to prominence onstage as one of the leads of Book of Mormon on Broadway, and in addition to feature film work, he stars alongside Billy Crystal in the upcoming FX comedy series The Comedians.
Gad is reprising his role as Olaf in the short film Frozen Fever (which is attached to Cinderella this weekend) as well as the just-announced Frozen 2, and he also stars alongside Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage in this summer’s 80s gaming-themed adventure pic Pixels. But I’ll be curious to see how Gad fares alongside Evans in Condon’s film. Given the actor’s vocal talents, I’m hoping he gets a chance to show off his pipes. I mean, the movie’s gotta include “Gaston”, right?
