You had to be living under a rock in the 1990s to not know about the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Not only did it take the already famous Will Smith and shoot him to super stardom, but it also had a theme song that everyone and their mother could sing word for word. The theme told the entire premise of the show in one of the catchiest tunes of the decades. As a refresher, after getting into some trouble in West Philadelphia, Will (Smith) is sent to Bel-Air, California for a chance at a better life with his mom's rich sister and her family. Street-smart Will living with his spoiled cousins ensued in many hijinks and classic comedic moments.

In 2019, Morgan Cooper uploaded a trailer for this show but framed it as if it were a drama. What would it look like if it wasn’t all slapstick comedy and fun times, but there were some actual real-life consequences transitioning from Philadelphia to California? Will Smith loved the idea and decided to pitch it to try and get it made into a series. Together, Smith and Cooper, with the help of the Peacock streaming service, are producing this dramatic re-imagining called Bel-Air. With a cast of fresh faces, the new series will have a lot of work to do in recreating these well-known and beloved characters.

Will (Jabari Banks)

As described above, Will is a good kid at heart but was headed down a dangerous path. With a second chance at life in a completely different environment, Will is going to face many challenges as he attempts to fit in. But conflicts will always arise when your circumstances are flipped-turned upside down.

In his very first star-making role, Jabari Banks is making his on-screen debut. In a now-viral moment, the real Will Smith broke the news to Jabari over Zoom letting him know he won the role. Jabari actually is from West Philadelphia. (Born and raised!) His background is mostly in musical theater and rap, a talent we may see in the course of the season.

Uncle Phil (Adrian Holmes)

Uncle Phil becomes a father figure to young Will. There are definitely some growing pains as Will isn’t used to having a father regularly in his life. Bel-Air is sure to explore this relationship more deeply even though Uncle Phil and Will had some seriously deep moments in the comedy as well. Uncle Phil is one of the most beloved characters in television history.

Adrian Holmes has been in television and film since the early 1990s. He has had major roles in Smallville, True Justice, Continuum, Arrow, and Hospital Show. In the original version, Uncle Phil was played by James Avery who passed away in 2013.

Aunt Viv (Cassandra Freeman)

Aunt Viv is the closest thing to a Mom Will has while he’s living away from his mom in Philly. She sometimes runs interference with Will and Uncle Phil, as she is very protective of her nephew. She is always the one that Will can relate to the most.

Cassandra Freeman had her first major role in the 2007 film, I Think I Love My Wife. Freeman has had main roles in Luke Cage, The Enemy Within, For Life, and The Last O.G. Janet Hubert played Aunt Viv in the original series. After a very public feud with Smith, she was fired and recast with Daphne Maxwell Reid for the rest of the run. Smith and Hubert reconciled on the 2020 cast reunion on HBO Max.

Carlton (Olly Sholotan)

Carlton is the middle child of Phil and Viv Banks. He is very spoiled and a little naive when it comes to social norms. He and Will have an antagonistic relationship, but with love at the very heart of it. In a dramatic remake, this relationship may be way tenser than the good fun it was in the sitcom.

Olly Sholotan is one of the stars of the film Run Hide Fight. He is also a musician and music producer. Bel-Air is his first major television role. Carlton was played by Alfonso Ribeiro in the original series. No word yet if his original dance, “the Carlton” will make an appearance or not.

Ashley (Akira Akbar)

Ashley Banks became an important part of Will’s life in the original show. They shared a special bond as Ashley was all too happy to have a fun older brother, unlike Carlton, and Will had the little sister he had always wanted. Hopefully, this will still remain an important relationship in Bel-Air.

Akira Akbar made a name for herself playing Young Beth on This is Us and a young Monica Rambeau in Captain Marvel. Ashley was originally played by Tatyana M. Ali.

Hillary (Coco Jones)

bel-air-peacock-image-7

As the oldest child of the Banks', Hillary is the epitome of the spoiled rich kid. In the original show, Hillary and Will provided a lot of comedy together as Will loved making fun of Hillary to her face. In this version, how will this dynamic play out? Hillary is sure to have many more levels than her counterpart in the sitcom.

Coco Jones, a musical superstar, rose to fame on the Disney Channel starring in the shows So Random! and Good Luck, Charlie. Karyn Parsons played Hillary in the original series.

Geoffrey (Jimmy Akingbola)

The snooty butler, Geoffrey, always seems simultaneously amused and irritated by Will. It’ll be interesting to see if he becomes an ally or an antagonist of Will.

Jimmy Akingbola has been working in film and television for 20 years. He has had major roles in TV Shows such as Fungus the Bogeyman, Arrow, Holby City, Kate & Koji, In the Long Run, and Ted Lasso. British actor Joseph Marcell played Geoffrey in the original sitcom.

Jazz (Jordan L. Jones)

In Fresh Prince, Jazz was a goofy sidekick who showed up to annoy the Banks. He is constantly seen being physically thrown from the house. In this new version, will he be a bad influence on Will or his only true, trusted confidant? Either way, it’s easy to assume Uncle Phil won’t be a fan.

Jordan L. Jones was a series regular on the TV Show, Rel. He has also had bit parts in The Rookie, Shameless, and Snowpiercer. Jazz was played by Smith’s bandmate and music partner, DJ Jazzy Jeff aka Jeffrey Allen Townes.

Also featured are Simone Joy Jones as Will’s girlfriend, Lisa, and April Parker Jones as Vy, Will’s Mom. Scottie Thompson, Karrueche Tran, Charlie Hall, Duane Martin, Joe Holt, and Stevonte Hart also star in the new production.

Bel-Air premieres on Peacock on February 13th.
