Back in July, we heard that Naomie Harris would be playing Moneypenny in the new James Bond film, Skyfall.  However, during the press conference for the movie, we learned the rumor was false and that Harris was playing a field operative named "Eve".  But now it looks like another fan-favorite character will be returning to the fold.  THR has confirmed Internet chatter that Ben Whishaw (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) will play James Bond's gadget guru, Q.  As far as the character's participation in the previous movies, there's not much to say other than he provided a dry-witted introduction to the gadgets Bond used over the course of the film.Hit the jump for more on the history of Q.  Directed by Sam Mendes,  Skyfall also stars Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, and Ralph Fiennes.  The film opens November 9, 2012.  Whishaw also co-stars in the Wachowski Siblings' and Tom Tykwer's upcoming adaptation of Cloud Atlas.Desmond Llewelyn played Q in 17 Bond movies starting with From Russia with Love and all the way to The World Is Not Enough, which made him a constant, comforting, and charming figure in the franchise.  Sadly, Llewelyn died in car crash in 1999.  The role was taken over by John Cleese in Die Another Day, and then character was dropped for the leaner, meaner franchise reboot, Casino Royale.I'll be interested to see what Whishaw does with the role since he'll be the first Q who is younger than Bond.  I'm also curious to see if the inclusion of a character like Q changes the tempo of the Daniel Craig Bond movies.  Granted, we don't know if Whishaw's Q will be a young-but-still-stodgy version of Q or if it's something grittier and hard-edged.  The only safe assumption we can make is that the character will be involved with gadgetry.  Otherwise, what's the point in even naming him, "Q"?desmond-llewelyn-q-01
