Lists of the best films of all time are not exactly unique. They come in all shapes and sizes, but when certain outlets like Cahiers du Cinema or the Director’s Guild of America put together said lists via their esteemed voting pools, there’s reason to take notice. Last year, BBC Culture tallied its own list of the 100 greatest American films of all time, and it was actually quite terrific, putting something more generalized like IMDb or the American Film Institute’s own list to shame.
The usual suspects made the cut, from Citizen Kane to The Godfather to Vertigo, but it’s also nice to see divisive films like 2001: A Space Odyssey cracking the Top 5 or John Ford’s Western classic The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance sliding in. There’s also room for more modern films, as The Dark Knight landed at #96, Spike Lee’s 25th Hour at #94, and even 12 Years a Slave just barely got in at #99.
While the list is nearly a year old, a new video supercut has surfaced that runs through all 100 films in seven minutes, arranging them in curious fashion by separating them into categories like “Alien” and “Bombshell” and going through the alphabet. It’s well worth a watch, if only to appreciate the diversity that American cinema has given throughout the decades.
