Between his narrative and documentary features, director Kevin Macdonald is well on his way to banging out six films in the span of three years, and we now have our first look at the Last King of Scotland helmer’s 2014 submarine thriller Black Sea.  The film stars Jude Law as a rogue captain who goes on a hunt for sunken treasure, but as greed desperation begins to take hold of his misfit crew, tensions cause the men to fight for their survival within their claustrophobic vessel.  Law apparently went through a bit of a physical transformation in order to play the down-on-his-luck blue collar captain, putting on weight, shaving his head, and growing out his stubble.  As evidenced by these first images, though, it’s tough to make someone that handsome look ugly.  What a bummer.

In all seriousness, the premise of Black Sea sounds highly intriguing and Macdonald has proven himself to be a skilled filmmaker, so I look forward to seeing the finished picture.  Macdonald’s latest film, How I Live Now, recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be released in theaters and on VOD on November 8th.
