The first trailer for director Craig S. Zahler’s horror Western Bone Tomahawk has been released online, and it’s pretty exciting stuff. The film stars Kurt Russell as a sheriff who, along with a few other folks, attempts to rescue a woman captured by a band of cannibalistic troglodytes that live beyond the edge of civilization. It’s kind of like a horror twist on The Searchers, but with more people-eating. The trailer offers an extended, somewhat disturbing look at the film, and my interest in the movie has skyrocketed since seeing that Zahler appears to be relying more on mood and dread rather than jump scares or gore. Though given that this is a cannibal movie, I imagine there will be plenty of the latter as well (related: read Haleigh's recent list of the best cannibal movies here)

Check the trailer out for yourself below, via EW. The film also stars Richard JenkinsPatrick WilsonMatthew FoxSean YoungDavid ArquetteLili Simmons, and Fred Melamed. Bone Tomahawk will be released in theaters, on iTunes, and on VOD on October 23rd, so start making those pre-Halloween plans to see it ASAP.

Here’s a synopsis for Bone Tomahawk:

When a group of cannibal savages kidnaps settlers from the small town of Bright Hope, an unlikely team of gunslingers, led by Sheriff Franklin Hunt, sets out to bring them home. But their enemy is more ruthless than anyone could have imagined, putting their mission - and survival itself - in serious jeopardy. This is a gritty action-packed thriller chronicling a terrifying rescue mission in the Old West.
