Call of Duty loves putting celebrity cameos in the trailers for their games, and their latest for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is no different by throwing in Michael Phelps and Danny McBride. The two celebrities appear longer than Robert Downey Jr. did when he did his trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and McBride gets in a solid burn on the celebrated athlete.
Speaking to EW, Phelps says he got the offer to be in the trailer shortly after he got back from the Rio games. “My agent had mentioned it to me and I think it was a pretty quick, ‘Yes, I would love to and it would be an honor.’” I don’t know if that’s a huge boost to the makers of the Call of Duty games or a big of a burn on the honor of being one of the greatest swimmers of all time. Then again, if I had won 28 gold medals, something fresh and new like being in a video game trailer might be a nice change of pace.
It also doesn’t hurt that Phelps is a big fan of the franchise:
“I do love the game and I have spent a bunch of hours playing it, especially during training camps and whenever we travel,” he added. “So, there’s definitely a good, little friendly competition between the teammates and it definitely takes our mind off competing when we’re traveling and it helps us relax a lot.”
The rest of the trailer, which was directed by Peter Berg, kinds of picks up on the funny/depressing hook that 2016 has been a pretty terrible year, and that in our times of trouble, it may be better to just leave this planet and shoot space aliens or something. I’m not exactly sure what the plot of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is, and it doesn’t really matter because it’s not like anyone plays Call of Duty games for the story.
Check out the trailer below. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will be released on November 4th.
