Earlier this year, writer/director Cameron Crowe made a tiny comment about one of his most beloved films, Say Anything, that got blown way out of proportion on account of a total lack of reading comprehension. He said that of any of the films he’s ever done, the 1989 John Cusack classic is the only one that he would consider making a sequel to. Cue the internets, and the words “Say Anything sequel” were all anyone read. While he’s currently busy with post-production on his latest flick We Bought a Zoo, the director recently sat down to clear the air about those sequel rumors as well as muse about possibly revisiting some of the characters in a different medium someday. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.Speaking with IFC, Crowe called any sort of Say Anything sequel “a pipe dream,” explaining:

"I was very surprised that got picked up and repeated so many times…It's a personal thing for me, that movie. It's probably my favorite thing I've ever done. And the last thing I would ever dream of doing is touching something that I feel so proud about in any way. I just love the characters and I was sort of musing out loud with this really cool person that had asked the question."

While a sequel is something Crowe will probably never do, he has thought about a follow-up using some of the same characters from the film:

"I remember those characters and I keep thinking that there's more that I could write about some of them, and not just Lloyd. If anything, it would be a side character or some story where there was some kind of linkage. I love Mike Cameron, I love the poor drunk that they drive home on the night of the grad party. As a writer, there's just more there that I always thought, 'Well someday.' Maybe it's just a short story. Maybe it's a miniature kind of thing that I write some day."

Now, this doesn’t mean a spinoff is something that will ever see the light of day. I think Crowe is just speaking openly here. I’m sure many writers ponder continuations of some of their favorite characters, but very rarely do those musings become actual “things.” But you never know. Crowe’s a creative guy, and it would certainly be cool to see him pen a short story that follows a couple of the supporting characters.

Just because he’s simultaneously working on three films (We Bought a Zoo and the documentaries Pearl Jam Twenty and The Union) doesn’t mean Crowe is too busy for his fans.  The director has been regularly making posts over at his official site The Uncool, and today he unveiled two extended scenes from Say Anything that never made it into the film.
