Disney and Marvel Studios have scheduled Captain America 2 (tentative title) for April 4, 2014.  As you may recall, the studios had previously scheduled the April 4th date for "Untitled Marvel 1".  Now that date belongs to Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) post-Avengers adventure.  The movie is still looking for a director, and the current frontrunners are F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), and television directors Anthony and Joseph Russo (Community).  It's worth noting that with a 2014 release date, Captain America 2 probably won't start shooting until late 2012 at the earliest.Hit the jump for more including the sequel's logline and a new image of Captain America in The Avengers. Captain America 2 currently has no competition on April 4, 2012.chris-evans-captain-america-2-sequel-imageThere are currently no official plot details on Captain America 2, but in an interview with Steve, The First Avengers screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely stressed that it would be hard to do a straight-up period piece now that Steve Rogers has already shown up in his future. However, they said they hoped to season the sequel with a fair amount of flashbacks.  Marvel also provided this logline:

The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.

The current line up Marvel Studios release dates are as follows:

  • The Avengers on May 4th, 2012
  • Iron Man 3 on May 3rd, 2013
  • Thor 2 on November 15th, 2013
  • Captain America 2 on April 4th 2014
  • Untitled Marvel 2 on May 16th 2014

Captain America 2 is a big blockbuster outside the traditional summer/Thanksgiving zone, so it has room to dominate before the summer season officially begins at the beginning of May.  And speaking of May 2014, raise your hands if you think the May 16, 2014 release date will go to The Avengers 2 (my hand is currently raised).
