The movie will also mark the return of William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.
Marvel has announced that production on Captain America: Civil War is finally underway, and their press release contains the massive cast. The major news here is that Paul Rudd is joining the film, which will mark his first appearance with the Avengers. Even more interesting is that William Hurt is returning to play General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, which marks the first time anyone from The Incredible Hulk has appeared in another Marvel movie.
To give you an idea of how bonkers this cast has become, here’s the full rundown (except for who’s playing Spider-Man, which is TBA):

The press release also notes that Martin Freeman is in the movie, but doesn’t specify his role. Even more interesting is that the press release makes no mention of Daniel Bruhl playing the villainous Baron Zemo, which the actor confirmed a few weeks ago. Furthermore, every actor with the exception of Freeman and Bruhl has been in a Marvel movie before.
Additionally, Marvel has released the first synopsis:
“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.
Make no mistake: Civil War is basically Avengers 2.5 at this point. There’s all of the new Avengers, more than half of the old Avengers, and characters like Ant-Man and Black Panther who could become Avengers at some point in the future.
I suppose putting “war” in your title demands a massive canvas, but I have no idea how directors Anthony and Joe Russo and screenwriters Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely plan to put this thing together. Joss Whedon is one of the most talented writers working today, and Age of Ultron struggled to accommodate three new characters. Civil War has the advantage of including a bunch of old faces, but we still want new development from them.
This movie is going to be insane. Whether it’s going to be insane in a good way remains to be seen.
