News out of Cannes 2016 has the comedic trio of Will FerrellCatherine Keener, and Michael Cera set to star in the darkly comic family vacation movie, Captain Dad. Written and directed by Sebastián Silva (The Maid), this project is being shopped to international investors through Protagonist Pictures, with domestic rights handled by UTA Independent Film Group, which packaged the film. The strong comedic trio should form the basis for bidding, but keep an eye on eventual casting for this picture since there's room for a lot of veteran and up-and-coming comedy talents.

Here's a look at the project's synopsis (via Deadline):

Rich Peelman (Ferrell) gives his wife Linda (Keener) the gift of a lifetime for her birthday: a trip through the Caribbean on a sailboat with all six of their kids and their partners. Stubborn, competitive and overly confident in his sailing abilities that are clearly out of sync with reality, Rich is determined that the vacation be run on his terms. But things do not go according to plan. His “father knows best” attitude clashes with the rest of the Peelman clan. And by the end, even the most patient of the bunch are ready to throw Captain Dad overboard, bringing new meaning to the idea of the dysfunctional family.

This sounds like a fun project for Ferrell, one with a plot that could conceivably take place after a particularly raucous Catalina Wine Mixer. Ferrell, who recently stepped back from a planned comedy centering on President Ronald Reagan (probably a good idea all around) will soon reunite with Mark Wahlberg for a sequel to their dysfunctional family comedy, Daddy's Home. Keener, meanwhile, has the dramas November Criminals, We Don't Belong Here, and Unless set to open this year. Cera's schedule is a bit light, but he'll be lending his voice to The LEGO Batman Movie as Robin/Dick Grayson, and is set to appear on the Twin Peaks reboot ... along with 200+ of his closest friends.
