Channing Tatum Joins CAPTAIN AMERICA Race; Keira Knightley, Alice Eve, and Emily Blunt Being Considered for Female Lead

     March 15, 2010

The casting madness for Joe Johnston’s The First Avenger: Captain America continues as now Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) has been linked to the title role.  Adding to the insanity, Deadline reports that Keira Knightley, Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League), and Emily Blunt are under consideration to play the female lead, which looks to be either Cap’s WWII girlfriend Peggy Carter or superhero Golden Girl (aka Betsy Ross).

Earlier today, we reported that Ryan Phillippe was also being considered for the role, but regarding Tatum, Deadline says that the ball is in Marvel’s court to make an offer since the actor has become bankable after G.I. Joe and his latest film, Dear John.  Other candidates in the running include Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), and Wilson Bethel (HBO’s Generation Kill).

Hit the jump for more on the female roles and my thoughts on the current state of the Captain casting.

captain_america_comic_book_art_01.jpgAs for the lead female role, we don’t know if the character will be original or pulled from the comics.  Deadline says the role is “Peggy” (likely Peggy Carter, who dated the Cap during World War II and was an American agent working with the French Resistance), but Heat Vision says the role is rumored to be Betsy Ross, the alter ego of superhero Golden Girl. It is worth noting that all three actresses are British and the film will be set in Europe during World War II.  However, Marvel already has a relationship with Blunt as they wanted her to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2, but Fox exercised an option it had on the actress and she had to do Gulliver’s Travels instead.

I think Tatum is an awful choice because in the films I’ve seen him (Stop-Loss, Fighting) he has the charisma and screen presence of a kumquat. Of the other actors named in connection to the role at this point, my vote is strongly with Chris Evans.  He’s got more charm and charisma than he knows what to do with, but can also deliver on the dramatic front (doubters, please see Sunshine).  Like Blunt, he also has a previous relationship with Marvel so hopefully that will work in his favor.
