About a month ago we got wind of a possible reunion for the team that brought the R-rated comedy Young Adult to theaters. That film starred Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, was written by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody, and was directed by Oscar-nominee Jason Reitman. That group will now unite once again for Tully, a new comedy that seems decidedly more heartfelt than the previous outing.

We can report that Bron Studios is onboard in order to co-produce and finance the picture; it’s from the company’s managing director Aaron L. Gilbert that the news was announced today. With Tully looking to start production in Vancouver late this summer, Sierra/Affinity has also joined the project in order to shop it to international buyers at Cannes next week. Completing the Young Adult reunion are producers Helen Estabrook and Mason Novick, who will produce the film alongside Reitman, Cody, and Theron.

charlize-theron-tullyTully tells the story of “Marlo (Theron), a mother of three including a newborn, who is gifted a night nanny by her brother. Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully.” It sounds almost like a contemporary take on Mary Poppins just without the magic or the music. And judging from Reitman and Cody’s previous work, Tully will likely skew toward a PG-13 or R rating, though I’m not quite sure where the adult themes will come into play with a synopsis like that.

As for Theron, she can currently be seen in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, but will almost certainly find a bigger audience when she plays the villain in F. Gary Gray’s Fast 8, which is currently filming in Cuba. Theron can also be heard as the character Monkey in Laika’s upcoming stop-motion animated film, Kubo and the Two Strings, which opens this August 19th.
