Earlier today I was lucky enough to be able to visit the set of one of my favorite shows on any channel: NBCâs Community. I got to visit the set in anticipation of the season two DVD, which hits stores September 6th, and season three, which premieres on Thursday September 22nd at 8/7c. While Iâll have a lot of video interviews with the entire cast very soon, I spoke with Chevy Chase about the upcoming Vacation reboot and a new Fletch movie and wanted to bring you what he said as soon as possible.A reboot of the Vacation franchise is currently in development at Warner Bros., and when I spoke with producer David Dobkin last month, he said that the new film would tell son Rustyâs story and have him encountering the same hijinks that his father did. Dobkin played coy about Chase making an appearance in the film, but Chaseâs answer today about a Vacation reboot came as a bit of a shock. He said heâs written a different script for a new Vacation film with co-star Beverly DâAngelo. He said:
"Iâve written an idea that would be basically like a "Swiss Family Griswold." Thereâs a cruise, thereâs a fire on the ship, we think the whole shipâs on fire and we jumpâitâs just a little fireâand we end up on an island where we meet Randy somewhere whoâs been left there from an old Survivor series."
Hit the jump for more.
While I'm not sure if Chase was being serious or joking around, it was the first time I'd heard him say that he'd written a script, so I thought I'd post what he said today. Also, it sounds like he still wants to play Fletch...
In addition, if you're a fan of The Wire and Michael K. Williams, you should watch the video further down the page. Look for the full interview soon.
Collider: Thereâs been a lot of talk about a reboot of Vacation at New Line. Have they approached you to appear?
Chase: Actually I think it went back to Warners. I think New Line sold it to Warners. I donât know whatâs gonna happen with that. Itâs the same thing with Fletch, I think they had Fletch and then they sold that to Warners too. So weâll see. I mean look, Iâm not gonna do Fletch unless Iâm Fletch, if they start writing something for a kid whoâs Fletch and Iâm just helping out, âBye.â I mean, thereâs no reason why, at my age, I canât still be Fletch. Iâve always been getting this impression that theyâd like me to be mentoring a younger Fletch type thing. No, what am I James Coburn on a Western? No. Nothing against James Coburn, heâs great. Is he alive? Yeah I think he is. I think heâs very much alive. And Vacation, actually Beverly DâAngelo and I have been working on our own script, which is pretty dang funny. Iâve written an idea that would be basically like a "Swiss Family Griswold." Thereâs a cruise, thereâs a fire on the ship, we think the whole shipâs on fire and we jumpâitâs just a little fireâand we end up on an island where we meet Randy somewhere whoâs been left there from an old Survivor series. I like that idea. Itâs hard to sell these things to the Warners people. It depends on whoâs there and what their mood is and what they think people are gonna like.
