Chris Kentis Laura Lau SILENT HOUSE Interview slice

Opening this weekend is Chris Kentis and Laura Lau‘s horror thriller Silent House.  Based on the Uruguayan pic La Casa Muda, Silent House centers on a young woman (Elizabeth Olsen) trapped in her family’s crumbling, secluded lakeside house.  The twist that makes Silent House stand out from your standard horror fare is that the movie was designed to make it look like it was shot in a single take. The story plays out in real time over 88 minutes as we follow Olsen’s character through the house.  Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens, Julia Taylor Ross, Haley Murphy, and Adam Barnett also star.  For more on the film, here’s the trailer, motion poster and a TV spot.

The other day I got to sit down with directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau for an exclusive interview.  We talked about how they got involved in the project, the way they prepared for the complicated shoot, exactly how many shots made up the movie, the reshoots after Sundance, the blown takes, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch.

Finally, you can watch my video interview with Elizabeth Olsen here.

Chris Kentis and Laura Lau

  • Do they have a favorite movie, director and actor.
  • How did they get involved in the project and was it tough to get financing.
  • While the film looks like one 88 minute shot, it was actually a low number of shots that were carefully cut together. I try and find out how many individual shots were put together to create the film.
  • They talk about the pre-production and what they did to prepare for the shoot.
  • After the Sundance premiere they reshot some of the film. I ask if they’re going to release both versions on the eventual Blu-ray/DVD release.
  • They talk about all the blown takes and I suggested they release they all as a montage on the home video release.
