Guillermo del Toro’s latest film, Crimson Peak, may not have broken the bank at the box office on opening weekend, but it’s certainly a film that provides much fodder for discussion. Del Toro made an out and out Gothic Romance, not a horror film, and in that regard I for one think the film succeeds beautifully. The first half hour feels like it’s been ripped from the pages of a Jane Austen or Charlotte Bronte novel, and ultimately this is a story about love in its many forms that is bolstered by some of the most lush production design and costumes seen on screen in years.
But enough of my rambling. How’d you like to hear a couple of people who are much more knowledgeable on the subject discuss Crimson Peak—filmmakers Christopher Nolan and Alejandro G. Iñárritu? The Directors Guild of America recently hosted two separate Q&A’s in which del Toro discussed his film alongside Nolan and Iñárritu, and they are fascinating. Del Toro previously hosted a Q&A for the anniversary of Nolan's Memento and his friendship with Iñárritu goes way back. Indeed, del Toro, Iñárritu, and Alfonso Cuaron frequently give input on each other’s films while in post-production as the trio have a candid filmmaker-to-filmmaker relationship—del Toro is at least partly responsible for coming up with the ending for Cuaron's Y tu mama tambien.
These two conversations with Nolan and Iñárritu are like catnip for cinephiles, as it’s a joy to simply watch three incredibly talented filmmakers dive deep on a specific movie. Del Toro even go so far as to reveal that his ideal version of Crimson Peak is in French with subtitles.
