With CinemaCon opening its doors to theater owners yesterday in Las Vegas, last night Paramount’s Rob Moore took the stage to open this year’s con by showing off tons of footage from their upcoming movies and talk about what they have in development. While we all knew the studio was developing Mission Impossible 6 with Tom Cruise, the studio revealed the movie goes into production later this year with a planned 2017 release date. In addition, with the popularity of the Transformers franchise, Paramount made sure to remind attendees they have three sequels in development along with solo films.

Besides talking about their in development slate, Moore touted the studios 2016 and 2017 plans by revealing new or the first footage from Ben-Hur, Robert Zemeckis’ spy thriller Allied which stars Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, Baywatch (which stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac EfronAlexandra Daddario and Kelly Rohrbach) Edward Zwick’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Rings, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Stephen Frears’ Florence Foster Jenkins, and a greeting from Vin Diesel and some of the cast of xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.

While some of the new footage looked fun, the real highlight of the presentation was the world premiere of footage from Prisoners and Sicario director Denis Villeneuve adaptation of Story Of Your Life. While I was expecting a lot from the film, the footage blew past my expectations and I think Villeneuve has crafted a smart sci-fi thriller that audiences will love. If you’re not familiar with the project, it’s based on the short story by Ted Chiang and adapted by Eric Heisserer (The Thing remake/prequel), and centers on an expert linguist (Amy Adams) who learns to communicate with aliens who have crash landed around the planet.  As she begins to communicate with them, she starts to have vivid flashbacks that could reveal the true reason for their visit. Trust me, I was completely sold on the project after seeing this footage.

Shortly after the panel I saw down with Peter from /Film and recorded our thoughts on the panel. Check it out below.
