Last night Sony’s Tom Rothman (Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group) took the CinemaCon stage to showcase their upcoming films. As you might imagine, with Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters arriving July 15th, a lot of time was spent pushing the film with Feig and cast members Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones on stage riffing. But Ghostbusters wasn't the only film teased, as Sony also revealed the first footage from Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, Ron Howard’s DaVinci Code sequel Inferno, the thriller The Shallows (starring Blake Lively), Underworld 5, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, and more.
And while the studio didn’t reveal any footage, they made sure to mention The Dark Tower had started filming that day, and showed title cards for Zombieland 2, The Equalizer 2, Bad Boys 3, and the Animated Spider-Man movie, and also teased new footage from the r rated animated movie Sausage Party and a number of other films.
However, there were two highlights during the Sony panel that I’ve yet to mention, and they were Ang Lee’s PTSD Iraq War drama Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk starring Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Garrett Hedlund, Steve Martin and director Morten Tyldum’s sci-fi romance Passengers starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt.
As you’ll hear me talk about in the video blog below with Peter from /Film, both films looked great for different reasons and I really think both could end up being really special. Also, the chemistry between Lawrence and Pratt was palpable and made me believe they were falling in love. Both movies open in theaters later this year.
Sorry for the audio issues you might notice in the video, we didn’t know we were having any problems while recording.
