Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return for its sixth season this summer, but some changes are in store for the fan-favorite TV series. ABC will be running the shortened 13-episode season, with another 13-episode seventh season arriving in time for the 2019-2020 TV calendar. The other big change is that, while Clark Gregg will certainly be back to join his co-stars on the Marvel TV show, he won't be embodying Agent/Director Phil Coulson, a character he's played on screens of all sizes since 2008.

Now, in a recent chat with Marvel, Gregg teases just what sort of character fans can expect to see him play in the upcoming sixth season and possibly beyond. Granted, he's not giving away much at all here except for the fact that he's definitely not playing Coulson, a first for his Marvel universe experience in more than 10 years. Your guess is as good as ours!

See what Gregg had to say about his mysterious turn on the upcoming season:

Clark Gregg joins Lorraine Cink to discuss his mysterious new character in the next season of Marvel's Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D. and his years of playing Agent Coulson.

At the ongoing TCA event, Marvel also chatted with series executive producer and Head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb about Gregg's new role. He said:

I can't really talk about the meaning other than to say that the show will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first show we did at Marvel Television. I could not have done the show without Clark. He's both my friend and our captain.
