Full show description:

It’s Monday so that means it’s time for our weekend box office report brought to you by our friends at AMC Theatres. The newest Marvel film, and the final installment of Marvel’s Phase 2 movies, Ant-Man opened in the #1 spot making an estimated $58 million dollars earning an A cinemascore, 92% audience rating and an 80% critic rating. This puts Ant-Man as the second lowest opening weekend for a Marvel film, but Marvel’s 12th consecutive opening in first place. Coming in the #2 position is Minions, dropping 56% from last week the animated film pulling in another estimated $50 million dollars to bring its 2 week total up to $216 million dollars domestically. In 3rd spot is the new R rated comedy Trainwreck starring Amy Schumer and directed by Judd Apatow brining in $30 million while Inside Out dropped to 4th spot bringing in $11.6 million. Rounding out the top 5 is Jurassic World making an additional $11.4 million to bring its domestic total up to $611 million dollars.

In early 2014 it was being reported that Warner Bros. was fast tracking reboots/sequels to both Gremlins and The Goonies. In a recent interview with ScreenCrush, director Chris Columbus, who wrote both the original Gremlins and Goonies, said that he was involved with WB heavily developing both new projects, however things have been slow and that audiences should expect either film too quickly. Earlier this year producer Frank Marshall stated that an actual story for the new film still had not been developed and that in terms of Goonies, despite some rumors that the new film would be a sequel and focus on the kids of the old cast, it would indeed NOT be a sequel and rather a reboot.

BUY OR SELL

Death, taxes, and people wanting to know about the chances for Hellboy 3. These seem to be the three inescapable truths about life. While at Comic-Con director Guillermo del Toro was asked, yet again, about the chances of a Hellboy 3 movie to which he said the following: “The hard fact is that the movie’s going to need about $120 million and there’s nobody knocking down our doors to give it to us. It’s a little beyond Kickstarter. It would be great to complete the trilogy, but in a way I don’t see the world—the industry—supporting that idea.”

As many of you will remember, in the early developmental days of the new James Bond film Spectre, it was reported that Skyfall director Sam Mendes would not return to helm the new film. Some time later Mendes changed his mind and is indeed directing the new film which hits theatres in just over 3 months. But according to Mendes, Spectre will in fact be his final Bond film. Mendes said the following: “I said no to the last one and then ended up doing it, and was pilloried by all my friends. But I do think this is probably it…I don’t think I could go down that road again. You do have to put everything else on hold.”

As many of you know a big screen version of Stephen King’s IT has been in development for some time and at one point has True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga attached to direct but he recently had to depart the project. However, it's being reported that Andy Muschietti, director of the 2013 horror Mama, produced by Guillermo del Toro, is in talks to take the helm. According to reports the film is still being planned as a 2-part series to be released 1 year apart.

MAIL BAG

Owen Curtis writes: I have noticed that until the release of The Wolf of Wall Street, the last major theatrical release over 3 hours was The Return of the King. That's a ten year gap, which is clear to me that studios are pressuring filmmakers to shorten their runtime more than ever before. Just look at the production problems of the film Margaret. While there are some movies that don't deserve to be anywhere near their running time, *cough* Transformers *cough*, I feel like this pressure can be detrimental to films that would earn it's runtime and wouldn't need to be a TV mini-series. Do you share my sentiments, or do you feel that more streamlined films will be better for moviegoers and the industry itself?

Chris Griffin writes: hey Collider love the show and mailbag, watch it all the time. My question is regarding a quick scene in the Batman v Superman trailer. At about 2:40 I believe when Batman's in the desert fighting the Superman soldiers, if you watch closely it looks as if Batman is break one of the soldiers necks! I watched it a few times to be sure and it seems like he does. Have you seen this too or am I just crazy. What are the chances of him killing in this movie? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Fabian Suarez writes: Love the show as always. I've been reading a lot about Ghostbusters fans being upset about the new Ghostbusters "reboot." From my understanding it is not the female casting that upsets fans, it is the fact that it will not acknowledge the previous two films or its founding fathers. Why do studios do things that will not appeal to the core fan base. Why doesn't a beloved franchise like Ghostbusters get the same love & continuation like the new Star Wars saga? How would star wars fans feel if they announced that they were going to reboot Star Wars or recast one of the main actors with a different cast. Would love to hear your thoughts!
