For those that don’t know, Human Target started as a DC Comics comic book.  Fact.  It was brought to television last year with a trio of talented actors at its core -- Mark Valley as Christopher Chase, Chi McBride as Winston and Jackie Earle Haley as Guerrero.  This season a new showrunner, Matthew Miller, takes the reins fresh off his work on Chuck.  We got a chance to speak with all four and talk about season two. They talked about the storyline, casting, and a lot more:

Matthew Miller’s enthusiasm for the series was readily apparent, as was a genuine respect for the production and existing cast.  This doesn’t mean he’s not going to shake things up a bit.  He let us know that he’s bringing in two more regular characters.  The first, Ilsa to be played by Indira Varima (Rome), the rich wife of a wealthy humanitarian who fears for her life after her husband’s death.  She will stay on past the first episode and generally become the team’s “Charlie.”

With the influx of her money, the office will see a makeover from its previous boy’ s club incarnation.  This will include a sleek, contemporary and cool look including a new conference table that will act like a huge iPad.  The other female character has yet to be cast.  The week’s case will continue to be the A story of each episode but the B stories will highlight one of the characters, exploring who they are and why they do what they do.  He doesn’t want Chance to be a total mystery to the audience, so I’d expect something of a wrap up to that storyline.  Fans of the series will be glad to know that Baptiste will return in the fourth episode, wherein Chance will need his help to rescue someone on behalf of Ilsa, and will in turn have to break Baptiste out.  When asked, Miller said the difference between Chuck and Chance is that Chuck is a guy who enters the spy world and becomes a fish out of water while Chance is the opposite, confident in the action and less comfortable at a Thanksgiving dinner.

Jackie Earle Haley addressed some non-series issues saying that the role of Sinestro was always a rumor as is any talk of a return to the revamped Nightmare on Elm Street currently.  Insightfully, Haley said that as Guerrero defined Chance and Winston through opposition in season one, Ilsa will define that trio in season two.  Mark Valley said the new additions to the cast will put less pressure on the antagonist of the week.  When asked which angel he’d be, Valley picked Farah Fawcett-Majors, but when followed up with a question about a Charlie’s Angels-esque  poster, he replied “let’s just nip this in the bud right now.”

Valley said Chi McBride once came up with the best analogy to describe the trio -- If Chance was a recovering alcoholic, Winston would be his sponsor and Guererro would be his former drug dealer.  Elena may be back as a love interest for Chance and Chi chimed in that Winston will still have his ex-wife. Also, Winston’s brother will appear working the wrong side of the law.  In comparing his military service to the character, Valley  said that Chance’s experiences would dwarf the experiences he actually had in the Army.   If they had to be a superhero, Chi would pick the Flash, but not the golden age Flash.  Valley would pick mild-mannered Clark Kent who could choose to be Superman if he had to, but only if he had to.

Pre-production has just started.  Shooting begins August 4th.  The new season launches Friday, September 24th at 8pm.  Thirteen episodes (at least) will be produced.  The influx of a bit of humor and the female touch will put this series into epic territory.  Mark your calendars.
