Paramount has released the first trailer for Crawl. The upcoming survival horror/disaster film follows Haley (Kaya Scodelario) who tries to find her missing father (Barry Pepper) during a hurricane only to become trapped as the flood waters rise. Oh, and those flood waters are filled with gators.

Sharks have definitely had their moment, but what about other predators? I’d say that it’s time for gators to have their moment, and watching two folks fight off gators seems like fun times. This trailer does a good job of selling the horror while not taking itself too seriously. In fact, I’m glad they’re not going too goofy because when you’re winking at the audience, the movie can be tedious, so this looks like the right amount of seriousness. My biggest qualm with the trailer is referring to Sam Raimi was “a producer of Evil Dead”, which, yeah, he produced the remake, but he’s done a few other notable films as well. In fact, if you were going to play up the freewheeling horror aspect, you might mention Army of Darkness and Drag Me to Hell. But sure, he’s also “a producer of Evil Dead.”

Check out the trailer below. Crawl opens July 12th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Crawl:

When a massive hurricane hits her Florida hometown, Haley (Kaya Scodelario) ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father (Barry Pepper). Finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears. From director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) and producers Craig Flores (300), Sam Raimi (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead) and Alexandre Aja, Crawl is a nail-biting horror thriller in theatres July 12, 2019.
