COMMUNITY Leads Critics’ Choice Awards With Six Nominations

     June 5, 2012

Despite 30 Rock often cracking wise about how NBC is barely a network anymore, the broadcaster lead the Critics’ Choice Awards nominations with 14 recognitions (although 30 Rock, unfortunately, received none). NBC’s low-rated but much beloved jewel Community picked up six nominations on its own, including five for acting (Joel McHale, Jim Rash, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, and Danny Pudi), solidifying its place in the canon of widely under-appreciated series with deeply rooted critical and cult followings.

Hit the jump for the full list of nominees, along with who got snubbed.

community-chang-propaganda-posterUnsurprisingly, ABC, FOX, HBO, AMC and FX rounded out the majority of the other nominations. In general, the list seems to be a safe bet as a sign post to the Emmys, particularly in the drama categories. There are some delightful inclusions (such as Carrie Preston for her role as the odd and plucky attorney Elsbeth Tascioni in CBS’ also low-rated but excellent series The Good Wife, and Cheryl Hines as the odd and plucky – notice a pattern? – satirical suburban Barbie doll Dallas Royce in ABC’s Suburgatory), particularly from the many British imports on TV last year (Sherlock, Luther and of course Downton Abbey).

On the flip side, Julie Bowen has received another nod for her portrayal of uptight super-mother Claire Dunphy on ABC’s Modern Family in the comedic actress category when a very valid argument could be made on behalf of her co-star Sophia Vegara, who typically gets the better lines and bigger laughs (and who is a large part of keeping the show watchable. Take that statement as you will).  Speaking of the great lines and keeping a series watchable, where is Dame Maggie Smith for PBS’ Downton Abbey? And as I mentioned before, 30 Rock was seemingly snubbed despite having one of its better seasons.

Overall, there aren’t many surprises. But which of your faves were ignored, or which nominations make your blood boil with injustice? Are there any that make you cheer for their much-deserved inclusions?
