While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association weighed in with their picks for the best entertainment of the year via this morning’s Golden Globe nominations, last night it was the critics’ turn to shine. The Broadcast Film Critics Association and Broadcast Television Journalists Association announced the winners of the Critics Choice Awards last night during a televised ceremony, and Oscar frontrunner La La Land came away as one of the big winners. Damien Chazelle’s delightful musical took eight awards in total, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. Chazelle’s script also earned Best Original Screenplay in a tie with Kenneth Lonergan’s masterful Manchester by the Sea.
Indeed, the other two big Oscar contenders, Manchester and Moonlight, didn’t go away empty handed. Manchester’s Casey Affleck won Best Actor while Lucas Hedges took home Best Young Actor/Actress. And Moonlight nabbed honors for Best Acting Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.
The Critics Choice Awards also include genre-specific categories for some reason, so Hacksaw Ridge won Best Action Movie (even though it kind of isn’t), while Deadpool won Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy for Ryan Reynolds. The stellar Arrival, meanwhile, won Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie. Oh and Suicide Squad actually won an award—Margot Robbie was named Best Actress in an Action Movie.
On the TV side, Game of Thrones picked up Best Drama Series and no other awards, while Westworld’s Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton took acting honors. Silicon Valley won Best Comedy Series while Donald Glover won Best Actor in a Comedy Series, but The People v. O.J. Simpson took home the most TV awards in all as it steamrolled the TV Movie/Limited Series category.
